Gwyneth Paltrow 'left skier brain-damaged' after hit-and-run crash, court hears

Gwyneth Paltrow left a fellow skier brain-damaged after a hit-and-run smash on the slopes, a court heard.

The Oscar-winning actress allegedly ploughed into retired optometrist Terry Sanderson as she skied down a green run at the Deer Valley resort in Park City, Utah, US, in 2016.

Ms Paltrow, 50, who was said to have been looking up the mountain at her two children when the crash happened, knocked the 69-year-old to the ground with such force he broke four ribs and his brain struck the inside of his skull, a jury heard.

His lawyer Lawrence Buhler said the Shakespeare In Love star got up and `bolts down the mountain to the bottom’ leaving the stricken skier to be rescued by a patrol sled.

One of her instructors told another skier at the scene the crash had been Terry’s fault.

He told him: “Do you realise your buddy has just taken out Gwyneth Paltrow?”

Mr Sanderson was taken to hospital where his injuries were diagnosed and treated.

Gwyneth has filed a counter-claim alleging he hit her

A doctor said he was still displaying brain damage 18 months later which was `permanent’.

Mr Sanderson is suing Ms Paltrow, who also starred in the movies Seven, Emma, Sliding Doors and The Talented Mr Ripley and TV series Glee, for £245,000 damages.

She has filed a counterclaim alleging he hit her and is seeking $1 – 82p.

Mr Buhler told a jury at Utah’s Third District Court Ms Paltrow’s `neglect, her choices and her conscious disregard for other people on the mountain all combined together’ to cause Mr Sanderson’s injuries.

He said Mr Sanderson’s skiing pal was the only witness to the accident.

The alleged victim’s doctor said the only way he could have sustained his broken ribs was if Ms Paltrow had skied into him.

The court heard the next day Mr Sanderson had been well enough to email his daughter: “I’m famous.”

The trial has continued.
