Hollyoaks star David Tag admitted his on-screen death came as a complete shock.
The actor, 39, portrayed Sylver McQueen on the Channel 4 soap from 2018 until he was killed off in dramatic fashion in January 2022. Mercedes McQueen (Jennifer Metcalfe) and Sylver’s daughter Cher (Bethannie Hare) were among those who were trapped inside after an explosion ripped through the Salon De Thé.
Sylver, who had departed the village but returned home after receiving a message from Cher, wasted no time entering the burning building to save his loved ones. He succeeded in doing so and accompanied Cher to the hospital, promising to be a proper dad in emotional scenes.

But with Bobby Costello (Jayden Fox) still missing, Mercedes believed he was trapped inside and without, hesitation, Sylver rushed back into the blazing salon to save his stepson. Sylver found Bobby but before he could get him out the building, a beam of wood collapsed on him.
He pleaded with Bobby to get help, to which he agreed. But as he exited the burning building, Bobby claimed he hadn’t seen Sylver inside and left him to die.
Sylver’s fate was sealed when the building exploded once again and collapsed, killing him. In an exclusive chat with Daily Star, David confessed that he was surprised about his character’s exit.
“The ending was all a bit of a surprise to me,” the soap star said. “They knew that they wanted me to go in a very dramatic fashion with a stunt but the whole thing about me dying was a surprise to me when I was told.

“But the new executive producer came in and I think they wanted to stamp their mark and change things up a little bit.” Despite the surprise, David was more than happy with the way his character exited the soap. “It just shifted things around and I was fine with it,” he explained. “I was ready for a new challenge and everything so it was all good.
He added: “I’m glad I died and I died a hero so I couldn’t have asked for anything better really.” In December, David will be playing Fleshcreep in Jack and the Beanstalk in Middleton’s Arena. The star is no stranger to pantomime, having performed as the Ringmaster in Goldilocks and the Three Bears in both 2021 and 2022.
But the actor confessed that performing in the shows last year was “tough” on his family. He said: “Last year was only two week rehearsals but it was really intense. They were around 10/12 hour days because there was so much to learn. In those two weeks I wasn’t really home at all but it was pretty tough.”
Speaking about his upcoming role, David shared his excitement as it’s something he’s never done before. He said: ” I’m excited to get my teeth into it because I’ve not really done anything like this before.”
