Hollywood icon Shelley Duvall has recently opened up on her career hiatus and shared the tragic reason why she was gone for so long.
The actress, best known for her role as Wendy Torrance in The Shining, is now 73 and has been enjoying a quiet life away from the spotlight.
Duvall recently spoke to PEOPLE and explained her hiatus and why she’s now ready to begin her comeback.

Her absence began when one of her brothers was sadly diagnosed with spinal cancer and she noticed less acting gigs were available throughout the 90s.
Those two factors meant that Shelley thought it would be best to move back to her hometown of Fort Worth in Texas.
She explained: “It’s the longest sabbatical I ever took, but it was for really important reasons – to get in touch with my family again.”
Duvall also admitted that she wasn’t making much of a profit from her Hollywood roles, despite being part of some of the most iconic movies throughout the 70s and 80s.
The star also revealed that she didn’t actually see much of the money she made from her fruitful acting career.
She said: “You didn’t get paid much – just scale plus 10 percent. They thought women would just marry and the husband [was] going to support them, but that doesn’t happen for everybody.”
Shelley was a total icon throughout the 1970s and 80s and starred alongside big name A-listers, including Jack Nicholson in The Shining and Robin Williams in Popeye.
However, she was greatly missed when she seemingly fell off the radar and disappeared from Hollywood altogether, but fans of The Shining star will be pleased to hear that she is getting back into the groove.
Shelley is starring in the indie horror film The Forest Hills, directed by Scott Goldberg, after she received a call from the filmmaker.
Goldberg also spoke to PEOPLE about the actress and gushed over her work.
He said: “Shelley’s a Hollywood icon. I’m happy that she has the opportunity to show that she still has the talent.”
Duvall has also fallen back in love with acting and said that “it is so much fun” and it has “enriched her life”.
