Home Alone is the ultimate cosy Christmas classic, but the price of Kevin’s grocery in today’s climate will have you on the edge of your seat.
The price of groceries and other household items has, of course, skyrocketed significantly since Kevin McAllister went on his famous shopping spree a whopping 33 years ago.

In the movie, Kevin popped out to buy a loaf of Wonder bread, a packet of Kraft macaroni cheese, Saran Wrap, a TV dinner from Stouffer’s, Tide washing detergent, half a gallon of Tropicana juice, half a gallon of milk, Snuggle dryer sheets and a pack of toy soldiers to top it all off.
Nowadays, splurging on all those name brand products would be enough to make anyone wince – especially during the holiday season. Over on TikTok, user SellitLikeLyons recently shared a video about the total in today’s money that would make your jaw drop.
The clip estimated how much Kevin’s purchases would cost today – back in 1990, his bill came to $19.83, which is not so bad, but due to inflation, today Kevin would ring up a cost almost triple that price.
According to the user, they estimated that the bread now goes for £1.99, the Stouffer’s meal is $3.99, mac and cheese goes for roughly $4.29 and the Tide pods reach a whopping $15.99 at certain retailers.
All in all, the McAllister kid’s total is an eye watering $60.63 after Michigan’s 6 per cent sales tax and doesn’t account for Kevin’s $1 coupon. In the video, the TikTok user noted that it is “nuts how much has changed” and viewers in the comment section were equally as gobsmacked.
One person said that the $100 “is the new 20” while another viewer wrote: “I bet the cashier’s wage is still the same in 2023 [laughing emoji].” Another person joked: “So, what you’re telling me is that my kids couldn’t survive if I accidentally left them Home Alone to go to a trip to Paris?”
Another viewer said that Tide products alone can reach “almost $20 now,” someone else said that it “made sense how the McAllisters could afford that house” and one more fan commented that they’d just watched Home Alone 2, where “the room service bill was over $900”.
