Acting heartthrob Hugh Grant has admitted he “hated” playing an Oompa Loompa in Wonka.
The 63-year-old joined a star-studded cast for the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel. In the movie he plays a grumpy creature that stars alongside Timothée Chalamet’s Wonka.
To create the animation Hugh’s face was put onto a motion capture body and when he was asked what the experience was like he said: “Drivel.” Asked what it was like having cameras stuck in his face he admitted: “It was like a crown of thorns, very uncomfortable.”

He added: “I made a big fuss about it. I couldn’t have hated the whole thing more.” Hugh said he was unsure throughout whether he was supposed to “act with my body or not, and I never received a satisfactory answer.”
“And frankly, what I did with my body was terrible, and it’s all been replaced with an animator.” Probed on whether the film was worth it, he jokingly said “not really” while the other cast members laughed around him.
Hugh was also asked if the dance aspect of the movie was difficult. He said: “It should be fun, but that was done by the animator. It’s very confusing, with CGI now, you can’t tell what’s going on.
