‘I’m a Real Housewife and had to pay for everything – bosses still had mean name for me’

One Real Housewives of Toronto star has lifted the lid on what it’s really like to film for the reality TV series – confessing that producers had cruel nicknames for the cast.

Kara Alloway was portrayed as the ‘villain’ in season one of the show back in 2017, alongside stars like Ann Kaplan and Roxy Earle.

But she says what we see on camera isn’t always true.

For a start, Real Housewives have to ‘pay to play’ if they want to appear in the franchise, and it’s not cheap.

Speaking exclusively to Daily Star, Kara explained: “It costs money. I don’t think people realise this. You have to pay to play.

“For example, our salary was less than C$30,000, which is around £15,000. You have to then pay for your clothes – they obviously don’t supply your wardrobe, because it’s supposed to be your real life.

“You pay for every party that you have: the catering, the alcohol. At my summer home, we did this extravagant dinner party. I had cheese flown in from Italy, my kids did this big fireworks show.

“That party alone cost me the equivalent of £5,000, just for that party. In doing this show, people are like, ‘You must have made so much money’, but no.”

Kara also speculated that the Canadian show budget ran out of money partway through filming, confessing: “It’s very strange. Because I wasn’t on the inside of production, I don’t know [if money ran out].

“But at the beginning, it seemed like everywhere we were going, it was ‘The limo will pick you up at this hour and deliver you here, and then the limo will bring you home’.

“But by the end of the production we were filming a lunch and they were like, ‘Show up at the restaurant at this time!'”

To make matters worse, after splurging on the show, Kara discovered that producers had given her the nickname ‘Special Snowflake’ behind her back.

“Not only did they favourites, but they had nicknames for all the cast members. So I was Special Snowflake, as I found out at the end. I’ll own that, whatever!

“A cast-mate of mine was B**chface *Insert First Name* among the crew. I saw an email that was circulated amongst all of the crew referring to her in that way. I was like, ‘Wow, that’s harsh’. And that wasn’t even me.”

Now Kara is channelling everything she learned from the show into her new novel, Most Hated.

“We have six women,” she explained of the book, “who are involved in a reality television show.

“That’s the backdrop for all of the things that play out. I got to peel back the curtain a little so readers can say, ‘Wow, does that actually happen on reality TV?'”
