Barbie with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling was right up my street. I went to my local Showcase Cinema dressed head to toe in pink and enjoyed the film with an ice blast in tow.
Understandably labelled as one of the best movies of the year, I wasn’t shocked – the feminist tones in the film only made it better and I left thinking this was one of the best films I’ve ever seen, still true.

I absolutely love girly films, the noughties ‘chick flicks’ still remain in my top 10 films today, but Barbie was different. It was thought provoking, real and a little unsettling, but I loved it.
Fast-forward seven days when I return to the cinema once again, but for something a little bit darker than what I’m used to.
The sea of pink was still just as strong – obviously a lot of attendees were going to see Barbie – but I haven’t seen the cinema that busy in years, which was fantastic to see.
Just like the week before, I picked up my ice blast and sat in my seat at the cinema ready to tackle a three-hour film.
My attention span is somewhat good, but I can occasionally find myself getting a bit bored of some movies, so I was pleasantly surprised when Oppenheimer was captivating throughout.
Now, judge me all you like, but I actually hadn’t heard of Oppenheimer before.
I’ve read up and watched plenty on the war, but apparently that was just an area I missed because I had no idea what was coming next during the entire film.
Did they make the nuke or not? Ignorance is bliss, I guess!
Cillian Murphy was a fantastic choice for the lead role and so many parts of the film had me in utter awe, but there was one scene which I think should go down in cinematic history.
Now I’m not going to give too much away, but the bomb scene was nothing short of immaculate.
My eyes were glued to the screen for a good three minutes and my heart was pounding the entire time, it’s not a scene I, or anyone else for that matter, will forget anytime soon.
I left the cinema educated, in awe and utterly speechless, which was somewhat similar to how I felt the week before…
I don’t think the two can be compared, really. Oppenheimer is a film brought to life based on historic events, while Barbie is an all-too-real snippet of what it’s like to live as a woman.
Both are educational in their own right, and both will dominate the awards season next year.
