Tragic death
In 2020, Roman broke down in tears on his Capital Breakfast show when he spoke about the death of his close friend, Joe Lyons.
Joe, who worked closely alongside Roman as a producer at Global Radio for nine years, took his own life aged 31.
Roman was devastated at the loss of his best friend and has since gone on to share his own experiences with battling depression.
He released Roman Kemp: Our Silent Emergency in 2021 which explores the mental health and suicide crisis affecting young men in the UK.
The documentary allowed him to explore his own battle with depression as he recalled a moment he contemplated taking his own life.
“All these pressures just came on top of me. I remember being in my bedroom not knowing what to do. That day, I thought about going to the train station and jumping in front of a train,” he told The Sun’s Fabulous.
Roman has since urged men to learn and openly talk about suicide, saying on a podcast: “We need to realise suicide is part of human life. It is OK to have those feelings.”
He added: “One in four men think about it at one point. Every man thinks they’re the only one and that scares them even more. If they know more think about it, they’re more likely to discuss it.”
Love life
Roman met Swiss scientist Anne-Sophie Fury on dating app Tinder and the pair went on to date for three years.
The couple moved in together at the beginning of the pandemic and even co-owned a pet dog called Luna.
They split a few months later, with the lockdown being the catalyst behind their breakup.
“Roman loved Sophie and things had been going really well for them,” a source told The Sun at the time.
They added: “But being in lockdown is tough for any couple and they just weren’t able to make things work, which has been upsetting and tough for them both.”
One year later, Roman reportedly found love again with his radio colleague, Codie Jones.
The duo allegedly bonded over the death of their close friend Joe and were said to be “head over heels” for each other.
However, the pair went their separate ways a few months later and Roman was soon spotted locking lips with German model Jette Kerkoff during a holiday in Mykonos.
He was also linked to Love Island star Maura Higgins and OnlyFans model Lottie Moss, however it is believed that Roman is currently single.
In October 2022, Roman candidly discussed his battle with depression and admitted he needs to focus on his own mental health before thinking about getting into another relationship.
“In an ideal world I’d meet someone in the middle of the street but that’s not reality. But I need to sort myself out first. I’m not ready to think about someone else until I can sort my own head out,” he told OK! magazine.
Quitting fame
Roman revealed he plans to leave the showbiz world within the next five years to lead a normal life after being diagnosed with a terrifying disorder.
After five years of demanding early starts and a non-stop schedule, Roman was diagnosed with sleep apnoea, a condition where breathing stops and starts again during sleep.
He revealed his condition got so bad that he was advised by doctors to wear an oxygen mask at night.
The star has been very vocal about his mental health struggles in recent years and told MailOnline that he is considering retiring early and pursuing other dreams away from showbiz.
Roman told the publication in 2022: “I am not doing this job to become famous, I know for a fact it doesn’t interest me.
“The reason I work, and my agent knows this, and my mum and dad know this. The only reason I am doing this is because I want to retire as a young person.”
He said he wants to start a family and do something completely different – like becoming a stay-at-home dad and opening up a dog sanctuary.
Speaking of his lifestyle, Roman added: “I have needed to take a realistic look at it and ask myself ‘is this life making me happy? Is it making me healthy?’ I am constantly trying to deal with that.”
