ITV Coronation Street heartbreaking Christmas story ‘leaked’ weeks before air date

Coronation Street star Peter Ash has teased a devasting Christmas ahead for his character Paul Foreman, as he continues to battle with motor neurone disease.

The 38-year-old actor appeared on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain to discuss upcoming scenes that some viewers may find distressing. Corrie fans will recall Paul being diagnosed with MND earlier this year and due to the fact that there is no cure, Paul’s demise is imminent.

Appearing on the ITV news programme alongside Sam Hayden-Harler, who helped the soap develop the storyline, actor Peter gave insight into the tragedy that awaits. He told GMB presenter Kate Garraway: “We’re filming Christmas at the moment, yeah, we’re usually two months ahead so we’re all fed up with it [Christmas] already!”

He continued: “It’s quite a sad Christmas really, for Paul, he finds out that he’s got six to 12 months left, so it’s looking likely this could be his last Christmas. So for him, it’s just making the most of every little moment and spending it with the family and kids.”

Coronation Street actor Peter Ash shared the heartbreak that awaits his character

At the start of this year, Paul had to undergo a number of tests after he was left struggling when he was accidentally run over by Carla Connor. The unexpected accident then led to Paul being given the heartbreaking diagnosis that he has MND.

The disease will eventually lead to Paul’s death and it will mean an exit for actor Peter, something which he previously shared that he felt conflicted with. Talking openly to Daily Star and other associated press, the actor said he was “shocked” to be leaving the show.

Explaining how he was told, he said at the time: “I think I was called into the producer Iain’s office late last year. He said ‘We’ve got this very big storyline for you, it should be a great thing to do. Unfortunately, it does mean an eventual exit’.

“Yeah, it was a shock, I suppose it’s always a bit scary when you’re called into his office. I had mixed feelings, obviously.”

The Corrie star went on: “I mean I’ll be sad to leave the show because it’s been such an amazing job, I’ve met some fantastic people. So yeah, I’ll be sad to leave but at the same time, I’m quite happy to be involved in such a powerful storyline that hopefully will bring awareness to it. It’s a double-edged sword.”

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
