Thanking everyone who voted for him, Sam said: “I am so grateful. I’ve dreamt of doing this show for years and years so you’ve just made a boy’s dream come true.”
Paying tribute, runner up Tony said: “Sam is the most unique person I have met in my life. He is the best. I predicted this ten days ago.
“I knew when I first met him, he deserves it and I am made up for him.” The pair developed a close friendship, with Tony saying Sam was like his “fifth child”.
He later joked that he would kidnap Sam so he the DJ could spend Christmas with his family in Liverpool. In his final interview with Ant and Dec, Sam gushed: “I never knew I could be as happy as I am right now, it’s been magical.
“It’s like a dream I don’t want you to wake me up from.” He added: “I got asked for my down moments in there and I don’t know, even the moments I felt low I was like ‘I am feeling low in the jungle’.
“There were so many amazing people I never thought I would get to spend time with.” Asked about the prospect of winning he said: “I just wanted to hit Cyclone. Anything else is a bonus and feels like a dream.”
