Jack Nicholson offered British royal cocaine ‘to get to know her better’ but she refused

Jack Nicholson has never been shy about his drug use – but at one typically wild Hollywood party, he may have pushed it just a little bit too far.

The iconic actor reportedly once offered a member of the British Royal Family the opportunity to do some cocaine with him, so ‘he could get to know her better’.

The hellraising actor is said to have pulled Princess Margaret aside at a glamorous dinner party held in her honour, according to a biography of Hollywood agent Sue Mengers.

Nicholson’s apparent icebreaker at the Los Angeles bash in 1979 was declined, as the princess opted to instead spend the night drinking and dancing with John Travolta, claimed the book.

The anecdote is recounted in the biography of Mengers, who hosted the party for the princess, the sister of then Queen Elizabeth II, in 1979.

It was the year after Margaret’s 18-year marriage to Lord Snowdon ended and Nicholson was still riding a wave of popularity after the success of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.

The cream of Hollywood, including Sean Connery, Robin Williams and Barry Manilow, were in attendance.

Nicholson turned up with his then-girlfriend, actress Anjelica Huston – but that did not stop him from approaching Princess Margaret, author Brian Kellow claims in Can I Go Now? The Life of Sue Mengers, Hollywood’s First Superagent.

And while Nicholson’s offer was likely a joke, Mengers was apparently concerned it had ruined her chances of being invited to Buckingham Palace.

The agent, who died in 2011 aged 79, was renowned for her bulging celebrity contacts book and wild parties.

It is claimed that Mengers kept a box full of ready-rolled cannabis joints on the coffee table at her home.

She referred to her stable of stars as “My Twinklies” and is said to have been “besotted” by the British Royal Family.

Mengers, who died in 2011 aged 79, was furious with Nicholson, fearing he had blown her chances of an invite to Buckingham Palace.

After turning down Nicholson’s offer, Margaret stayed at the party until 12.30am, dancing repeatedly with Travolta until her friend Prince Rupert Loewenstein – the Rolling Stones’ financial adviser – took her home.

The agent, whose brash personality helped her build up a list of star clients including Barbra Streisand and Michael Caine, once said in an interview that she thought the party for Princess Margaret was a rare personal disaster.

“Every time she looked my way I curtsied. I was curtsying all night! She thought I was an idiot.”

Nicholson has never been shy about his drug use, telling People during a 1980 interview: “I don’t advocate anything for anybody. But I choose always to be candid because I don’t like the closet atmosphere of drugging.

“In other words, it ain’t no big thing. You can wreck yourself with it, but Christ, you can wreck yourself with anything.”
