Napoleon star Joaquin Phoenix got down on all fours and squealed “like a little pig” in one of the year’s weirdest sex scenes – and it wasn’t in the script.
The 49-year-old Academy Award winner played titular character, French military commander Napoleon Bonaparte, in Ridley Scott’s romanticised biography. Amongst the breath-taking battle scenes and captivating drama, another thing stood out: the film’s kooky sex scenes.
“Sex can get boring,” the Gladiator director said on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast on Monday. So, in order to spice up the onscreen bonking, Ridley, 86, always kept at least four cameras rolling during intimate scenes to allow the actors to freely express themselves.

“It releases and frees up the actors. If mistakes occur, I never cut,” he said. “It gives [Joaquin] the freedom to do what he wants.”
And those who have caught the flick on the silver screen from November 22 certainly took note of how Joaquin utilised that freedom to the max to produce one of the film’s most entertaining, albeit difficult to watch, segments. The strange love scene follows on from Napoleon’s first onscreen romp with his evidently dissatisfied wife Josephine, played by Vanessa Kirby, in an act he refers to as “c**k work”.
Driven by a desire for an heir, the saucy scene that follows sees Joaquin crawling on all fours under the long dining table and whinnying like a farmyard animal as he tries to impregnate his unimpressed partner.
“The scene where he crawls underneath the table at breakfast time was unplanned,” Ridley said. “He just did that. I put a tablecloth on so I could maximise the shadow of this guy crawling underneath the table grunting like a little pig.”
The British filmmaker explained that he wanted to make the film’s sex scenes comical. “Therefore we decided to make all the sensual scenes amusing – though by being amusing, it adds sensuality to them, strangely enough,” he said.
