Kate Garraway shares horrific Derek incident in taxi after rushing him to hospital

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway told viewers about an incident which took place during a taxi ride to hospital with sick husband Derek.

The 55-year-old explained that the taxi had driven over a bump, causing Derek to slip out of his wheelchair and Kate was unable to lift him back up.

Kate revealed that “they went over a bump and he slipped out of his wheelchair” and added she thought it “was asking a lot to require taxi drivers to answer 999 calls”.

She weighed in on the debate, adding: “I’ve used a lot of cabs because the mobility services are very very delayed, the ambulances are delayed. If you book an official car you can sometimes be waiting for five hours for them to bring you to and from hospital.”

Derek was in a lot of pain so we got a taxi cab, they went over a speed bump and he slipped out ,” Kate added before Ben said: “That’s something you’d never envisage happening.”

“You want someone with you when that’s happening, Kate replied. Luckily the taxi driver had a mobility access cared for his dad post a stroke so he was really good at handling someone in that condition.”

“So, the two of us were hauling him back into this wheelchair, strapped him in and got him home,” Kate concluded.

Kate and co-host Ben Shephard had been discussing the debate of whether taxi drivers should be answering 999 calls to help with the pressure being put on the NHS ambulance services.

In Thursday’s episode of GMB, Kate clashed with Shadow Attorney General Emily Thornberry over her husband Derek Draper’s treatment in a private hospital.

Derek, 55, who caught Covid in 2020 and was left in a critical condition and has been fighting to overcome health problems ever since.

“I know from personal experience because when Derek was first sick and he had to be moved to hospital, there were no spaces on any wards for him to go, for the treatment he needed,” Kate explained.

She added: “If you’re going to pay for some people who need to go to private hospitals, what about doing it for everybody?”
