Madonna’s 'lowest' interview – X-rated slurs, 'pant sniffing' and smoking on air

Madonna appeared on CBS’s Late Show with David Letterman back in 1994, which resulted in the most censored episode in American talk show history.

The singer swore on air, smoked a cigar and mentioned sniffing underwear throughout her interview which created a huge public outcry.

Her behaviour was also slammed, with many branding her responses as provocative and “full of double entendres”.

Madonna is known for her out-there nature and daring personality, but many American viewers considered this a step too far.

Madonna’s antics

The star was already on thin ice with critics after the release of her explicit coffee table book Sex and her album Erotica.

During her talk with Letterman, Madonna swore many, many times.

In total, she said the word “f***” 14 times, each one censored by the producers which meant that her chat show appearance was “the most censored in American network television talk show history”.

Despite her potty mouth, this had a positive impact on Letterman’s viewing figures.

Madonna helped the host achieve some of the highest ratings he had ever seen on the show due to her cheeky quips.

One such comment came when she walked onto the set holding a pair of underwear and asked the host to give them a whiff.

She demanded: “Wait a minute, aren’t you going to smell them?”

Letterman joked that he would “take care of that later” before she turned to the audience and complained about his snub.

The Material Girl singer then sparked up a cigar and interrupted Letterman by calling him a “sick f***”.

David then asked Madonna about her personal life and pressed her on her relationships with NBA basketball players.

The singer made a lot of innuendos and commented on the “length” of the overhead microphone before she joked that she “thought he was going to ask her about something else” when Letterman commented on the pain of her nose piercing.

The comments kept on coming as she insulted Letterman by saying that “money had made him soft”.

Madonna also slammed David for referencing her sex life and continued to swear before asking the host whether he had ever “urinated in the shower”.

As their interview came to a close, Madonna asked him if he’d ever smoked marijuana and branded him a “liar” for denying the statement.

David’s Response

Upon her arrival to the stage, Letterman jokingly introduced her as “one of the biggest stars in the world” who had “slept with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry”.

He also asked Madonna to kiss one of the men in the audience, but the star refused.

At the end of her slot, Madonna refused to leave the set and the audience heckled her as Letterman cut to a commercial break.

Upon the show’s return, he joked that “Mother Theresa was going to drop by” and sarcastically told viewers that his talk show had “been cancelled” and that there would be “no show the next day”.

The Aftermath

Critics have branded Madonna’s appearance on the show as her “lowest low” and viewers were clearly unimpressed with her behaviour.

The Federal Communications Commission received a huge number of complaints regarding her expletives.

Madonna later claimed that her strange reactions were an attempt to rebel against the censorship of television.

She had David escort her onstage at the 1994 MTV VMA Awards to show that all was well between the pair.

Madonna spoke to Spin magazine the following year and revealed: “[…] Letterman knew I was going to do it. I talked to the producers of the show. Everybody was like: ‘This will be really funny if you keep saying ‘f***’ a lot they’ll just keep bleeping you.”

She continued: “Well, I came out and started doing it and David freaked out. The way he introduced me was derogatory, so my whole thing was: “Ok, if that’s how you want to play it, you cannot beat me at this game’.”

Letterman also spoke to USA Today about a letter she sent him on his birthday which read: “Happy f***ing birthday, Dave! Glad you could get so much mileage out of the f***ing show. Next time, you need some f***ing publicity, just give me a f***ing call. Love, the Anti-Christ.”
