Major Netflix show ‘set to be axed’ after next series as Hollywood leading man quits

One major Netflix series could be set for the chop after a final season, with its leading man quitting to pursue other projects. The Witcher – based on the hit video game series – confirmed that Liam Hemsworth would be taking over from Henry Cavill as Geralt in season five.

But after that, the series is rumoured to be drawing to a close, just months after losing its original star. Reports from Redanian Intelligence said: “There’s no official confirmation for this yet, but we’ve been hearing recently that yes, season five is very likely the final season of The Witcher on Netflix.”

Based originally on the Witcher Saga books by Andrzej Sapkowski, the news makes sense. There are only five books in total, and two that haven’t yet been adapted for the screen. Season four looks set to focus on The Tower of the Swallow, and season five The Lady of the Lake. Writers would then be totally reliant on crafting their own storylines.

Season four will hit the streaming service next year in 2024, with casting director Sophie Holland telling Deadline: “We’re just about to start filming on season four with Liam Hemsworth and there will be a short gap then we go straight into season five.”

In October 2022, Henry Cavill revealed he would quit his role as Geralt of Rivia – with ‘creative differences’ thought to be responsible for his departure. Producer Lauren Hissrich revealed: “A lot of the notes he was sending to me were about Geralt’s dialogue – could he, first of all, say more.

“Everybody came out of season one laughing and loving Geralt’s fuming. But Henry was saying that when you read the books you spend a lot of time in Geralt’s head. So how can we put that on the page?”

Cavill himself told Philstar: “It’s important for me to have the character be three-dimensional. And it’s tricky to do, as I was saying earlier, because there’s a certain vision and there’s a certain set storyline and plot. And so, it was about me trying to find Geralt’s place within that. All of my asks and requests were along the lines of just being faithful to the source material.”

And now Liam Hemsworth will be stepping into Geralt’s shoes, confirming on Instagram: “As a Witcher fan I’m over the moon about the opportunity to play Geralt of Rivia. Henry Cavill has been an incredible Geralt, and I’m honoured that he’s handing me the reins and allowing me to take up the White Wolf’s blades for the next chapter of his adventure.”

Cavill’s co-star Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer of Vengerberg, admitted it was “hard to take” the news of Henry quitting “because he’s a crucial part of the show and we all adore him”. She added: “We’re gonna miss him a lot. I wish him all the best.”
