When Tommy Lee and Pamela Anderson abruptly fired their renovation crew for alleged shoddy work on their Malibu mansion, they left electrician Rand Gauthier in the lurch, owing him a hefty $20,000 (£16,000). Disgruntled and ready to write off the debt, Gauthier, along with a general contractor, returned to the couple’s Mulholland Highway estate to retrieve their tools.

To their shock, Tommy Lee greeted them with a shotgun, snarling, “Get the f**k off my property.” “I was never really that popular with people,” Gauthier recalled, “But I had never been held at gunpoint. It screwed with my head.”
Gauthier’s anger transformed into a thirst for revenge. He wanted to strip away Tommy Lee’s aura of invincibility and make him realise he was just a mortal. As a result, Gauthier hatched a plan to steal the mansion’s giant safe, stumbling upon the pair’s now infamous sex tape.
Mob Connections and Biker Gang Showdown

Gauthier, along with a partner, copied the tape and tried to find a distributor, but they faced multiple rejections due to the lack of signed releases from Tommy and Pamela. Desperate, they turned to a man with ties to a New York mob family to fund their operation. The tape spread like wildfire, and they soon found themselves in hot water with a biker gang, rumoured to have been sent by Tommy Lee himself.

Gauthier also told Rollins Stone he received a Facebook message from a page bearing the name Tommy Lee. All it said was: “Hey you fu**ng fa**ot. The Pam and Tommy sex tape is the most infamous stolen celebrity artefact on the planet,” with a wink accompanying the word “stolen.”
Champagne Showers and Wild Nights with Prostitutes

Gauthier, who was hurled into the spotlight after releasing the tape, confessed to Rolling Stone that he squandered his ill-gotten gains on champagne and prostitutes every night. The allure of fame and fortune was too much for him to resist, leading him down a scandalous path of extravagance. Having banked a hefty sum from the mob who funded the release of the tape, Gautheier, a former porn star himself and now an electrician fearing for his life, found himself with piles of cash as he indulged on the finer things in life.

However, with the tape out of control, Gauthier went into hiding for over a year, fearing retaliation from all sides. Eventually, he had to close down his operation, but he still owed the mob-linked backer. To repay his debt, he worked as a collector for the mob.

As the tape circulated beyond everyone’s control, Gauthier focused on his electrical work and distanced himself from friends who believed he was hoarding massive profits. He later moved up the coast to get away from it all.
When asked about the tape in 2014, he said he sometimes tells people he stole it, even if they don’t believe him. Of the tape itself, he told Rolling Stone: “It was cute. They’re in love and a couple and they’re just having fun with each other, and I think that’s great. I’m jealous. I wish I had something like that.”
