The news of their separation has come as a huge shock to fans all over the world after the actress was spotted wearing her wedding ring at the Princesa de Asturias Awards 2023 earlier this week. And five years ago, the pair attended the 2018 Oscars together and looked every bit the happy couple as the posed for pictures together, despite them reportedly being separated at the time.
The 74-year-old actress, who is famed for her well-established film career in blockbuster flicks such as Mamma Mia! and The Devil Wears Prada, was first introduced to Don by her brother back in 1978. The pair tied the knot later that same year during a romantic ceremony in the garden of her parents’ house.
Their nuptials took place just six months after her late boyfriend and fellow actor, John Cazale, passed away in March 1978 following a devastating diagnoses of lung cancer. One year after his death, the Oscar-winning actor reflected on his death.
She told People magazine at the time: “The death is still very much with me. It had forced me to confront my own mortality, and once you do that, you look at things differently.” Following his death, Meryl moved out of her shared apartment with Cazale and received help from her brother and his friend Don Gummer.
It was at this point that the pair grew close and he let the Mamma Mia! Star sublet his apartment in New York City when he wasn’t in the Big Apple. The duo soon began to exchange letters and it didn’t take long before a friendship developed into something more romantic.
After their ceremony, the newlyweds started expanding their family in the years that followed. The doting parent moved into a lavished private estate in Connecticut in 1985 which is estimated to value at $1.8million.
They went on to purchase a $3million mansion in Brentwood, Los Angeles, in 1990 before they later moved back to Connecticut. Not much is known about the pair’s relationship as they preferred to keep their love life out of the public eye.

But when Meryl was asked about her marriage to the artist in 2002, she said that the secret behind their long marriage was “goodwill and willingness to bend – and to shut up every once in a while.” Speaking to Vogue magazine at the time, she added: “There’s no road map on how to raise a family: It’s always an enormous negotiation.
“But I have a holistic need to work and to have huge ties of love in my life,” she added. Their children have gone on to follow in their parents’ artistic footsteps, with their son Henry becoming a musician.
Louisa is known for her acting role in the HBO Max series, The Gilded Age. Mamie has also taken on roles in front of the camera and starred in projects such as Heartburn and Emily Owens. M.D. Grace has also appeared in Dr. Death, Mr Robot and American Horror Story: Freak Show.
