Miley Cyrus opens up on backstage process of controversial topless snap aged 15

Miley Cyrus has opened up about the behind-the-scenes during her infamous topless photoshoot when she was just 15-years-old.

The picture shocked the world when it was published by Vanity Fair back in 2008 after Miley took part in the photoshoot with photographer Annie Leibovitz.

Cyrus was snapped topless with just her arms and a swathe of white fabric held in front of her chest to cover her modesty.

She wore her long brunette hair over one shoulder and red lipstick for the scantily-clad snap.

For her new Disney+ special, Endless Summer Vacation: Continued (Backyard Sessions), Miley reflected on the picture and spoke about what happened away from the camera.

Cyrus said “everybody knows the controversy of the photo,” but assured fans that they “don’t really know the behind-the-scenes”.

Miley said that her sister Noah was “sat on Annie’s lap” and “pushing the buttons on the camera” to take the snaps.

Cyrus said her family were “also on set” before she explained the styling choices.

She said: “This was the first time I ever wore red lipstick because Pati Dubroff, who did my makeup, thought that would be another element that would divide me from Hannah Montana.”

“This image of me is the complete opposite of the bubblegum pop star that I had been known for being, and that’s what was so upsetting. But, really brilliant choices. Looking back now on those people.”

In the spread, titled Miley Knows Best, the Hannah Montana actress was also pictured with her father Billy Ray Cyrus.

The picture was met with outrage at the time as her Disney Channel show was still airing.

Many parents were upset and Disney Channel gave a statement denouncing Vanity Fair for “deliberately manipulating a 15-year-old in order to sell magazines”.

The actress later issued a public apology for the photoshoot and New York Post ran a cover on “Miley’s Shame,” but over ten years later Miley clapped back.

She tweeted out a picture of the front cover and wrote in all caps: “I’m not sorry, f**k you.”

At the time, Annie also issued and apology and said that it was a “simple, classic portrait” that she thought was “very beautiful”.
