‘Most traumatising horror film ever’ Tusk was actually based on real-life events

One horror film that has been branded ‘worse than The Human Centipede’ was actually based on a true story.

2014 film Tusk follows a podcaster who heads out to visit a recluse in his secluded home, and soon learns of his obsession with walruses.

Soon the poor man is surgically transformed into a gruesome walrus himself, complete with fleshy patches all over his body and bony tusks protruding from his lip.

The ‘walrus’ is kept chained up next to a pool of water and eventually becomes so brainwashed that he believes he truly is an animal – and has to live out the rest of his tragic life in a zoo.

Though the film is technically a horror comedy, certain scenes are severely lacking in the comedy aspect.

But the whole thing is actually loosely based on the true story of an online prank advert, written by Brighton native Chris Parkinson.

The advert was supposedly from an old man offering a room rent-free with just one caveat. Said tenant will have to occasionally dress as and act like a walrus.

While the writer of the ad didn’t expect much, a barrage of more than 400 replies saw people desperate for somewhere to live without paying rent, so much so they were actually willing to dress as a walrus.

But sadly the whole thing was just a joke, and Chris never really wanted someone to become a walrus for him – unlike serial killer Howe in the film, who hands out flyers to lure his next victim to his home.

Howe is a retired sailor in the flick, who became obsessed with walruses when he once killed and ate one that saved his life out at sea.

In the film, he surgically transforms his victims into the walrus, named Mr Tusk, and reenacts his time together with the walrus he killed.

And for podcaster Wallace, who is known for his vile episodes which have previously led to suicides, it’s a definite taste of his own medicine.
