Music legend Donny Osmond shares sweet moment fan ‘changed his life’

Donny Osmond has revealed the moment a fan changed his life – and why he reversed a decision never to play one of his biggest hits ever again.

Puppy Love – which was written in 1960 by Paul Anka – gave Donny a massive hit when he recorded his own version, clinching a Number 1 in 1972 and sending a generation of teenage girls crazy in the meantime.

But as often happens when songs become worldwide hits, Donny eventually got fed up with it, and used to take the p**s out of it during his own shows – until he had an encounter that changed everything.

The 65-year-old told The One Show tonight (Thursday, April 20): “I never wanted to sing Puppy Love again in my life because I was making that transition from teeny-bopper to an adult performer.

“After one show at the stage door, [this fan] grabs me and said, ‘Why did you make fun of Puppy Love on stage?’

“In a very cocky kind of way I said, ‘It’s my song and I can do whatever I want to do with it.’

“Then she said something that changed my life. She said, ‘Yes, you may have had a hit with that song, but Puppy Love was a big part of my childhood memories and you have no right to mess with my memories’.”

Donny – who has released an incredible 65 albums – said he now never makes fun of the song.

He said: “I used to sing, ‘Someone help me, help me’… and then I’d stop and say, ‘All the guys are throwing up’.

“And it caused a little bit of a laugh [but] I don’t do that anymore, man. You treat the song with respect because it was a great song.”

Elsewhere in the interview, he asks BBC presenters Alex Jones and Ronan Keating for a selfie, and he also jokes about his massive family.

When Ronan asks if he’ll be bringing all his grandchildren over to the UK for his shows later this year, he replied: “I don’t know about all of them. I mean, all of my grandkids? That’s the whole state of Utah!

“We’re changing our names from Osmond to Rabbit.”
