Netflix fans can’t cope with huge twist in new ‘unhinged’ horror film from Saw creator

There’s one new horror film on Netflix that has left fans so shaken they’ve vowed they’ll ‘never forget it’.

That movie is Malignant, created by Saw and Insidious creator James Wan. It follows Madison (Annabelle Wallis), who is plagued by awful visions of people being murdered in gruesome circumstances. But things get worse as she realises her visions are in fact real, and playing out in real time.

Malignant also features one of the strangest twists ever seen in horror – and while we won’t spoil it for you, it involves plenty of “blood and guts”, according to James Wan. He told Screen Rant: “The whole time I was thinking, how do I take this seed of an idea and actually turn it into a film and what I can do with that can possibly allow me to have fun with all kinds of practical effects that I haven’t played with in a while?

“You know, the blood and guts and all the cool animatronic stuff. It stemmed from all kinds of aspirations, but that really was the start of that idea.”

Viewers have been reacting to the movie on X – formerly Twitter – and admitted they can’t get the “weird” flick out of their heads. One wrote: “If you haven’t seen the horror movie Malignant, it’s now on Netflix and I fully recommend it. F**king bats**t, love it.”

Somebody else penned: “Malignant is on Netflix! One of the most unhinged horror movies in years. So good.” While a third fan echoed: “It’s absolutely insane and so much fun!”

Others, however, haven’t been as impressed – leaving the film with a score of 6.2 on IMDb. One viewer wrote: “I just watched Malignant and cannot even begin to describe how badly written and acted it was. Still not even close to the worst film I’ve seen on Netflix. Really questioning why I’m still paying for it.”

Another quipped: “If anyone wants to waste two hours of their life, Malignant on Netflix is dogsh**.” While a third critic penned: “Malignant on Netflix is well worth a watch, if only for how hilariously dreadful it is.”

Wan had a response of his own to the criticism, as he admitted the film is “so aware” of what it is. He told The Wrap: “I don’t know how anyone can think that Malignant was made from a self-serious perspective. I mean, it’s so aware of what it is, I think.

“And even if they don’t think the film is that way, they can at least look at me and the body of work that I’ve done. I feel like people know the kind of films I’ve made by now, and I think that aspect, the baggage that I bring to it would be pretty obvious, I think.”

He got the story idea from his wife, Ingrid Bisu, when they were looking for a project to collaborate on. James added: “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness, this could be interesting.’ This could be something that I can sink my teeth into and turn it into an original story that I’ve never done before. That’s where the story began.”
