Actress Angela Bassett’s emotional reaction when she lost out on an Oscar to Jamie Lee Curtis has gone viral.
Angela, who was nominated for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, appeared to be overcome with emotion when it was revealed Jamie Lee Curtis had won the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once.
A gobsmacked Jamie Lee could be seen ecstatic to receive her first Oscar, while Angela Bassett looked visibly disappointed as she watched on from her seat.

To add insult to injury, Angela appeared to be the only nominee showcasing her disappointment as fellow nominees Hong Chau, Kerry Condon and Stephanie Hsu applauded.
The moment did not go unnoticed by viewers of The Oscars, with some claiming the disappointing moment “hurt”. One viewer shared: “Angela Bassett reaction hurts.”
Another viewer replied with a close up clip of Angela’s reaction, as they said: “The close up version of Angela Bassett’s reaction hurts even more.”
A third agreed as they simply said: “Did her dirty bro.”
Others watching the ceremony from home were quick to brand the actress a “sore loser” for her reaction.
One viewer tweeted: “Bassett is a fantastic actress. A shame she didn’t continue performing tonight and applaud when Jamie Lee won.
“Everyone wants to win. However most won’t. That’s life. And sore loser is never a good look.”
Another shared: “All you saying Angela Bassett should’ve won over Jamie lee… her reaction was poor sportsmanship.”
However some fans of the actress were quick to defend her, with one writing on social media: “Everybody talking about Angela Bassett reaction saying she’s a sore loser…how about y’all put in hard work and oscar worthy performances for 30+ years just to barely get any recognition and when you do get recognized you get snubbed, her reaction was REAL and RAW.”
Another fan wrote: “Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE Jamie Lee Curtis but her role in EEAAO was not even the best supporting actress performance in that movie.
“Angela Bassett stayed seated when she was announced as she should’ve. A queen never stands for an institution that refuses to honor her.”
Some criticism also came for Jamie Lee, as viewers questioned whether she was a worthy winner, given who she was nominated alongside.
One viewer tweeted: “Jamie’s reaction affirms that Angela was the top contender. Every time a Black actor is on the verge of making history for a remarkable performance, The Academy opts to issue one retroactively to a peer. Bet if she was #thehelp vs the queen, Angela Bassett would’ve won.”
Others even went as far to say they switched the award ceremony off following the moment, with one disgruntled viewer writing: “Yeah had to turn off the Oscars after they didn’t give Angela Bassett the award.”
The award for Jamie Lee Curtis joined a huge string of wins for the film Everything Everywhere All at Once. The film picked up seven wins, where it earned top honours including Best Picture as well as individual recognitions for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Jamie Lee Curtis.
The film’s full award wins included Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Editing, and Best Original screenplay.
