Pamela Anderson reveals she was 'painfully shy' before nude Playboy centrefold shoot

Pamela Anderson has revealed she used to suffer from a ‘debilitating shyness’ prior to posing nude for her infamous Playboy centrefold photoshoot.

The 55-year old, who shot to fame in the late 1980s starring as C. J. Parker in Baywatch told ET Canada in an interview that she lacked self-confidence and didn’t see herself as pretty.

Pammy, who famously turned down initial advances from the magazine’s owner Hugh Hefner asking her to model for the publication, eventually went on to feature on the mag’s cover on a record 14 occasions.

She explained: “I became painfully shy, and the shyness was something that was so debilitating. When I was little, I would wear a hat over my head and pull the hole closed, so I could only see out this much.”

The actress went on to admit that following that Playboy shoot she felt her ‘first feeling of freedom’.

Recalling early discussions with Playboy, Pamela said: “I was in Vancouver and they approached me a few times and I said no. Finally, I was in a situation and thought, ‘Why not? Let me try this.’ Then I got to L.A. and I was horrified.”

Continuing her account of those days, she added: “I did my first photoshoot with Playboy… it was the first flash when I opened my eyes and it felt like I was falling off a cliff.

“It really felt like I was just… allowing, instead of trying to control. And it was my first feeling of freedom, then I was off to the races!”

Earlier this year, meanwhile, Canadian Pam revealed her nude shoot almost never happened becuase she had to ‘sneak across the border’ to get into the US.

Speaking ahead of the release of her Netflix documentary, ‘Pamela, A Love Story’, she said: “They were going to get me down to LA, but I’d never been on a plane before, so I had my problems at the airport.

“They said, ‘what are you doing in LA?’ and I said, ‘I’m posing for Playboy.’ I remember showing them my letter that I got from [Hugh] Hefner and everything, and they were like ‘oh no, no, no. You’re Canadian, you can’t work in America.’ I was like, ‘what?'”

The star tried to board a plane a second time, but encountered further problems, saying: “I went into the bathroom, changed my clothes, put a hat on, went to another airline and I get to there and the same lady was there like this, ‘nice try’.”

After two attempts to board a plane, Pamela then snuck across the border from Canada to America via coach, before finally flying down to Los Angeles to secure the job that would launch her to fame.
