Paul McCartney 'nearly run over' filming on Beatles' famous Abbey Road zebra crossing

Sir Paul McCartney almost met his maker on the Abbey Road zebra crossing made famous by his former band The Beatles, it has been revealed.

Macca was back on the street in London’s St John’s Wood recently whilst his daughter Mary filmed a new documentary for Disney+ celebrating 90 years of the world famous Abbey Road Studios building.

The 80-year old superstar was attempting to recreate the Fab Four’s iconic 1969 album sleeve for use in Mary’s first ever feature-length production ‘If These Walls Could Sing’ when the incident occurred.

Photographer and filmmaker Mary, 53, told S Magazine: “The bit where the car nearly ran him over on the zebra crossing, that was so funny.

“As we were leaving (the studio), I said, ‘I’ll film you (on the crossing),’ and he went over and this car totally didn’t stop for him!”

Mary went on to reveal she was very nervous to show her Dad the fruits of her labour as the studio was the site of the majority of the Beatles’ legendary recordings and a place he held in such high regard.

“I took him to a cinema to watch it and kept thinking, ‘Oh my goodness, I hope he likes it. The next day, I was at an event and somebody said, ‘I saw your dad and he was talking about the documentary for ages’,” she explained.

“It’s somewhere he’s really passionate about so when he heard I was doing the documentary, he was really pleased and it made him think about Abbey Road again and a lot of the stories.”

Mary also spoke of the emotions she feels every time she visits Abbey Road – where she reminisces about past times spent with late Mum, Linda McCartney, who passed away from breast cancer in 1998.

She said even now a lot of people still work there who worked with Paul and Linda, and some still “pull her aside” to tell her how “inclusive and great” her mum was.

As well as Sir Paul, Mary’s documentary features special appearances from Beatles drummer Ringo Starr, pop icon Sir Elton John, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters and Oasis singer Liam Gallagher.
