Paul O’Grady’s grieving husband reveals late star’s emotional grim reaper appearance

Paul O’Grady pretended he was the Grim Reaper to comfort a sick child.

The comic and TV host was asked to phone the little boy, who had just hours to live.

He used his trademark black humour to help him cope.

Paul’s husband, Andre Portasio, recalled: “This young boy was very ill and he had only a few hours to live. Paul called him and said, ‘Hello this is Paul O’Grady, it’s very nice to speak to you.

“You know me for my day job but what you don’t know of me is I also work as the Grim Reaper.

“I’ve spoken to my boss and tonight is not your night. You have so much more to live and to enjoy and to experience’.”

The pep talk convinced the boy to make the most of the time he had left.

Andre added: “Later we found out that the boy stood up, took a shower, had a meal and sat with his family for the whole evening.

“Unfortunately he died a few days later.”

Beloved Paul died “unexpectedly but peacefully” on March 28 at the age of 67.

The For The Love Of Dogs star died from a cardiac arrest which was linked to his coronary heart disease, his death certificate later revealed.

Paul’s funeral took place on April 20, and a number of famous faces gathered, as well as his loved ones, to say their goodbyes.

Alan Carr and Melanie Sykes attended, as did Rolling Stones legend Ronnie Wood and his wife Sally Humphreys.

A funeral procession passed through Aldington before it headed to the church “as a way of marking Paul’s affection for the area”.
