Pierce Brosnan ‘could face prison time’ after being accused of entering forbidden area

Pierce Brosnan could reportedly be facing jail time after allegedly venturing into an off-limits area of the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming.

The James Bond star, 70, is facing two charges as he’s accused of hiking off the approved trails and into a “delicate” and dangerous thermal area at Mammoth Terraces, a large complex of hot springs located in the northwest corner of national park.

The actor was issued citations for “foot travel in a thermal area” and “closure violation” for allegedly entering the restricted area of the park on November 1, according to records from the U.S. District Court for the District of Wyoming.

The court docket, according to MailOnline, labels both charges as a “petty offence” and Pierce, who was reportedly filming for his upcoming film The Unholy Trinity in the area at the time, hasn’t entered a plea yet. The Mamma Mia actor, who has dubbed himself an “environmentalist”, has been ordered to make a mandatory appearance in court on January 23, 2024.

The Mammoth Terraces are a popular spot in Yellowstone and feature two boardwalks, an upper and lower one, where visitors are permitted to safely hike to view the hot springs. But Federal laws state visitors must stick to the designated walkways and venturing off them is punishable by up to six months in jail and a fine of up to $5,000, the National Park Service website states.

The National Park Service warns that more than 20 people have died after they entered or fell into Yellowstone’s hot springs. Among them was Il Hun Ro, a 70-year-old man who’s foot was discovered floating in one of the hot springs by a park employee last August.

Urging people to keep safe by staying on the permitted routes, the National Park Service website states: “Boardwalks and trails protect you and delicate thermal formations. Water in hot springs can cause severe or fatal burns, and scalding water underlies most of the thin, breakable crust around hot springs.”

And it’s clear the park takes the rules seriously. Back in April a man was handed a short jail sentence after he pleaded guilty to walking in an off-limits thermal area at Yellowstone National Park.

Cory L. Skinner, from New York, was handed a seven-day jail sentence and two years of unsupervised probation for “knowingly and unlawfully entering a thermal area,” K2 Radio reports. He was also ordered to pay a $10 special assessment, a $500 fine, and $1,250 in community service to the Park’s nonprofit partner Yellowstone Forever Geologic Resource Fund in Bozeman, Montana.
