Piers Morgan has hit out at Lioness goalkeeper Mary Earps Sports Personality of the Year award win as he claims others should have lifted the trophy over her.
The controversial TV figure also suggsted fellow Lioness Beth Mead shouldn’t have been awarded the prestigious title last year, with the likes of male sporting stars Rory McIlroy, Frankie Dettori and Ronnie O’Sullivan missing out in the last two years.
Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Morgan wrote: “Trying to get my head around two of England’s women footballers winning BBC SPOTY in successive years… while male sporting superstars with great personalities like Rory McIlroy, Frankie Dettori & Ronnie O’Sullivan have never won it.”

In a continued rant, Morgan claimed Earps should have won a trophy during the last 12 months for her to have deserved the win, despite her winning the Golden Glove award at the World Cup and helping lead England and Manchester United to the World Cup final and FA Cup final respectively, and, crucially, winning the Arnold Clark Trophy tournament.
He continued in another post: “No offence to Ms Earps, but shouldn’t it have been given to someone who actually won something in 2023?”
One X user tried to spell it out as clearly as possible to how the voting system works to Morgan. They wrote: “Basically what happened was one year Beth Mead was voted by the public as winner and then the following year Mary Earps was voted by the public as winner.”
Another person said: “She sold more GK shirts than Pickford. Made girls believe. Brought joy to millions despite making us wake up at stupid times to see the games. She also won the Arnold Clark Cup if that helps your frankly ridiculous argument.”
One person said: “Is Morgan going full [Joey] Barton here? Never ever go full Barton!”
Another user referenced Morgan and Joey Barton both having potential meltdowns over the win following on from Barton’s controversial takes on women in sport. They wrote: “Fragile male tears incoming, Piers Morgan is already gobbing off and I’m sure Joey Barton is in shambles somewhere. You just love to see it.”
The comparisons to former Manchester City and QPR midfielder Joey Barton come after recent outbursts towards women in football and other sports.
Barton, who was recently sacked by Bristol Rovers in League One, writing on X, the ex-midfielder previously said: “Any man who listens to Women commentary or co-comms needs their heads testing…”
He also added: “Women shouldn’t be talking with any kind of authority in the men’s game. Come on. Let’s be serious.
“It’s a completely different game. If you don’t accept that. We will always see things differently. The women’s game is thriving. Fantastic to see. I cannot take a thing they say serious in the men’s arena.”
Despite his recent outbursts, Barton was quick to congratulate Mary Earps. He said on X: “Well done Mary” followed by clapping emojis.
Earps said after her award win: “First of all I’d like to say how humbled I am to be on a list of such incredible athletes. I’ve really enjoyed hearing your stories tonight.
“I think sport is a fantastic thing that brings the world together and to hear you guys talk and to hear your guys’ journeys, I just think it’s unbelievable so congratulations to you all. Also, thanks for voting for me, everyone who voted for me, I should have probably started with that one.
“Thank you very much. I’m very honoured and humbled and I feel like this for me is the ultimate all-time sporting accolade and I think us as Lionesses and obviously at United as well, we’ve had an incredible couple of years but this is just, yeh, wow.
“It’s not been the easiest of journeys but I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today without the help of a number of incredible people in my corner.”
