One Canadian Real Housewives franchise appeared to “run out” of money partway through filming – before coming to an abrupt end after just one season.
Kara Alloway found fame on Real Housewives of Toronto before turning her hand to novel writing based on her experiences, and confessed that while stars initially took limousines to expensive lunches, eventually they had to make their own way around.
Stars had to “pay to play” and dish out thousands of dollars of their own money on extravagant parties to up show drama, and while things might look totally luxe, it wasn’t all as it seemed.

While fans have speculated that the “lack of drama” and “casting issues” might have led to the franchise’s indefinite hiatus, Kara had some things to clear up exclusively with Daily Star.
She explained: “For our show specifically they picked you up in the limo, which was nice. Towards the end I think they were running out of money because they were like, ‘Get yourself there’ – I’m not kidding.
“It’s very strange. Because I wasn’t on the inside of production, I don’t know [if money ran out].
“But at the beginning, it seemed like everywhere we were going, it was ‘The limo will pick you up at this hour and deliver you here, and then the limo will bring you home’.
“But by the end of the production we were filming a lunch and they were like, ‘Show up at the restaurant at this time!'”
Kara also explained how things really go down during those expensive luncheons, confessing: “You order your meals ahead of time, because obviously the restaurant isn’t going to be cooking and preparing while you’re talking, they don’t want any background sounds.
“For us, they shut the restaurant down. People who watched the show said, ‘Fake, fake, fake’ because of that, and I totally agree because when you watch it you want to see other people in the background!
“I thought that looked really fake too. They always had us sit King Henry style in a U-shape, so the camera can take everyone in, but other franchises don’t do that – you’ll see the backs of people as they sit people across and I like that. It’s more real to me.”
And Kara never once got to scoff the posh grub on offer because she didn’t want to eat on camera.
“I would always take it home because I didn’t want to waste it. I remember thinking, ‘Why don’t we just fake it? Why don’t we just order and the food never comes?’ Nobody needs to see me getting that food!” she giggled.

“On camera, the lunch lasts maybe five minutes, but the actual lunch would be like three hours. They’ll say, ‘Kara, lunch at this place, please arrive for 12 o’ clock’.
“You’ve done your hair and make-up and you’re ready to go, but there were times I would circle the block for maybe 45 minutes while they were filming the other people’s entrances.
“What that does is, it’s a good psychological way to mess with you. You’re hyped up to do this lunch, especially if it’s going to have a confrontation, and it ramps your anxiety through the roof as you’re doing this endless traffic circle in your city.
“They decide not only who sits where but also who arrives when, so other people can arrive first and talk about you before you get there. Or to give the appearance that you’re late, when really you’ve just been driving around.”
Now Kara is channelling everything she learned from the show into her new novel, Most Hated, which is available in all good bookshops.
