Richard Hammond breaks silence as Top Gear co-star tragically dies aged just 55

Ex-Top Gear star Richard Hammond has paid an emotional tribute to one of his former co-stars, who tragically died aged 55.

Ken Block died at the weekend while riding a snowmobile up a steep slope at his Utah home, before the vehicle upended and landed on top of him. He was pronounced dead at the scene, aged just 55.

He starred on BBC’s hit show Top Gear, as well as being a legendary rally driver.

Now Richard has opened up about the tragic loss, branding Ken a “passionate dynamo”.

He told The Sun: “His family have lost such a passionate dynamo – their loss is being felt to an extent by millions of people. I hope they can take some comfort in seeing globally how many people were devastated when they saw the news.”

He added: “I wish I had spent more time with him, but like everyone else I am more than anything a fan of Ken.”

Richard said Ken “never listened to a briefing” and “just wanted to get on with it”, explaining he knew his limits behind the wheel and “lived in that space”.

Ken’s team, Hoonigan Racing Division, shared the sad news of his death in a statement as they paid tribute to the rally car legend.

The statement read: “It’s with our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today.

“Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and a husband. He will be incredibly missed.”

He appeared on Top Gear twice in his career, first alongside James May who partnered him in a Subaru for a rally stage around a California airport.

He was later challenged by Jeremy Clarkson to drive a Reliant Robin on its three wheels around a test track, but flipped the car at the first corner.

The Grand Tour star James May has also paid tribute to the racing legend, writing on Twitter: “RIP Ken Block, with thanks for some hilarious days out. Here’s the airfield drifting piece from years back,” along with a segment Block starred in.
