Romesh Ranganathan's BBC show thrown into chaos as deadly polar bear hunted crew

Comedian Romesh Ranganathan was hunted by a man-eating polar bear while on ‘duty’ filming a TV show.

The 45-year-old talked about his terrifying experience whilst filming his series The Misadventures of Romesh Ranganathan in the Canadian Arctic.

Romesh, his crew and their tour guide were looking for tusked narwhal whales when the party was spotted by a polar bear.

The creature is one of the few species that has humans on its menu and it stalked them for miles until he called off filming.

He said on Journey to the Magic podcast: “The rule is if you’re in the path of a polar bear, no matter how far away it is, if it’s in your sight you have to get out of the way of it because as soon as it sees you it will start heading towards you.

“The party originally saw the wild animal walking across in front of them and then went off to listen for narwhals. As they were listening out for the whales, they spotted the same polar bear again which was now heading towards them.

He said: “So we all get up, get in the skidoos and we head off and then go set up somewhere else. We looked to the left and it’s the same polar bear heading towards us.

“Romesh and his crew had to move four times until someone said the bear can smell the food they were carrying and it was following them and that’s when he panicked.

“I was supposed to remain calm and then… ‘Let’s get out here guys! Let’s get out of here!’,” he said.

The crew’s attempts at calming him down were futile as the comedian was fearing for his life.

“‘I can’t [stay calm]! We’re being followed by a polar bear!’ It was so bad. That bit wasn’t filmed because as soon as we saw we packed up, thank God. If it had been filmed I would have asked to destroy the rushes (unedited footage).”
