Ross Kemp says his successful career as a documentary maker is down to a horse. The ex-EastEnder, 59, rode the stallion over sand dunes in the United Arab Emirates. He said: “This horse knew exactly what he was doing. I wasn’t driving this horse – the horse was driving the horse.
“And I suddenly became aware of a glow in the distance in the way that he was headed. So we came up over a dune and this amazing glow hit me and it was the burn-off from a refinery.

“It all came to me that everything that I’d been enjoying – this wonderful hotel, the air conditioning, the swimming pool, the meals that I was eating – were all generated from this stuff coming out of the ground.” Ross added: “It was like he took me there to show me.
“And I suddenly realised that maybe just saying other people’s lines for the rest of my life wasn’t going to be enough.” Ross rose to fame as Grant Mitchell on the BBC soap.
He first appeared on the soap in 1990, where he became involved in some big storylines that included his turbulent marriage to Sharon Watts. But he left the soap in 1999, nearly ten years.
Kemp has returned to Walford on several occasions, such as in 2005 and 2016, for the death of his on-screen mother Peggy Mitchell. His most recent appearance was in September 2016.
More recently in a GMB interview, the Walford star admitted of a sneaky tactic to up his earning while performing as Grant Mitchell on the BBC show. He told presenters Ben Shepherd and Susanna Reid: “If you were doing three days in the Vic, which you would normally do, I would normally be standing back.

“I’d work out that I was not in the middle episode that they were shooting that day and obviously cameras like the one pointing at me now has a red light on top of it when it’s recording. So I got on very well with the camera guys and I’d say: ‘Is this episode 235 and not episode 234 or 233?’ They’d go ‘Yes’, I’m not in that one, well I am now.”
‘”Big Ron, er pint and pork scratchings was it? Ok, mate, I’ll be back in a second. ‘Episode fee’. But soon before long chiefs realised what was going on and stopped him bank rolling extra cash. He added: “They soon cottoned on to me I’ll have to say.”
