Shrek to return with fifth movie as original cast reprise role – including retired star

Shrek is set for its fifth instalment, a whopping 22 years after the first film’s original release.

The franchise is rumoured to return after Mike Myers, who voiced Shrek, Cameron Diaz, who voiced Fiona, and Eddie Murphy, who voiced Donkey, have been in talks about making a fifth film.

DreamWorks Animation’s creative partner Chris Meledandri has also confirmed that talks with the Shrek stars are underway and that all parties are on board with the idea.

Although the Hollywood A-listers are all eager to make another film, no official deals are yet in place but judging by their reactions, Shrek fans could be seeing a new movie in the coming years.

More good news comes as the studio is discussing a possible Donkey spin off movie.

Meledandri said: “We anticipate the cast coming back. Talks are starting now and every indication that we’ve gotten is there’s tremendous enthusiasm on behalf of the actors to return.”

He continued: “It’s evidence of his strong enthusiasm for a role that he so brilliantly inhabited and really created alongside the artists at DreamWorks. I found that comment to be very exciting.”

Eddie Murphy recently spoke on the idea of a Donkey film and hilariously threw shade at Antonio Banderas’ character Puss in Boots.

The comic joked: “They did Puss in Boots movies, they should have done a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots. I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t as funny as Donkey!”

Murphy’s co-star Cameron Diaz’s much anticipated return to Hollywood could soon become a reality after the actress decided to retire.

The 50-year-old stepped back from the industry back in 2014 and later announced her retirement from acting in 2018, just four years later.

Despite her massive career move, which was announced five years ago, Diaz is reportedly willing to make a comeback and reprise her role as the feisty Fiona.

The original Shrek movie was released over two decades ago and was an instant hit.

It broke box office expectations and achieved huge success, which later resulted in a well deserved Oscar Award for Best Animated Feature.

Since Mike Myers originally burst onto the silver screen as the loveable green ogre, there have been a further three films released in the franchise.

Three spin off Puss in Boots movies have also been released.
