A sickening scene has been voted the “most shocking start to a horror film” in history by movie buffs.
According to ranker.com, one noughties horror film takes the crown away from classics like Saw, Scream and The Exorcist for its shocking opening scene.
And while it’s hard to beat the terrifyingly silent opening to 28 Days Later or seeing a teenager chomped up by a shark in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws, one film managed it.

You’d think the title would be handed easily to the Saw franchise, right? Its legion of terrifying traps laid out by Jigsaw set the films off on their torturous way.
But you’d be wrong. That gong goes to the 2002 flick Ghost Ship, starring Lord of the Rings actor Karl Urban and ER icon Julianna Margulies.
The film follows the salvage crew of the Arctic Warrior, who discover a long-lost passenger cruiser dating back to 1962, floating lifeless in the middle of the ocean.
But the crew soon realise that the long-dead inhabitants of the ship are still on board, and ready to haunt them through the creepy, rusted corridors.
The film’s opening scene sees the original 1962 passengers enjoying a rowdy night of dancing, but as they really get into the groove, a wire cable on the boat snaps and slices through the entire crowd of revellers.
After chopping the heads off a simple bouquet of flowers, the wire goes on to decapitate the human passengers, slicing some totally in half – and viewers are forced to watch as a woman’s torso slides right off her legs.
In the centre of the chaos, a single little girl survives because she was too short for the wire to hit. But a little girl, trapped at sea by herself? It can’t end well.

It’s not the only gory scene of the movie, however, as two members of the salvage crew later tuck into some of the canned food they find onboard – and are surprised to find it tastes delicious.
However, it soon turns out they’re hallucinating and are actually chowing down on a bowl full of squirming maggots.
The film inspired countless other trapped at sea horror movies, including the 2009 flick Triangle – which also features a truly gross food scene.
