Tributes were left outside the star’s former home by fans ahead of the funeral as they gathered together to mourn the Irish singer.
Sinead’s cortege was led by a Garda escort and a Volkswagen Transporter which played Bob Marley & The Wailers’ Natural Mystic from the speakers.
It stopped outside her former home, Montebello, around noon, where fans threw flowers on the car and sang her hit song Nothing Compares 2 U.
Her home was also covered in flowers, cards and candles as hundreds of fans gathered to pay their respects to the late star.
Bob Geldof, Edge and Bono were also seen at the funeral as they were spotted leaving the private burial, with Bob putting the window down on his car as he left.
Sinead was just 56 when she passed away after being left devastated by the loss of her son Shane, 17, who tragically took his own life months previous.
The Nothing Compares 2 U singer’s family released a statement which read: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad.
“Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
At the time, Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar tweeted: “Really sorry to hear of the passing of Sinéad O’Connor.
“Her music was loved around the world and her talent was unmatched and beyond compare.
“Condolences to her family, her friends and all who loved her music. Ar dheis Dé go Raibh a hAnam. [Rest in peace.]”
Comedian Dara O’Briain also said: “Ah s****, Sinéad O’Connor has died. That’s just very sad news. Poor thing. I hope she realised how much love there was for her.”
Una Healy also commented and said: “It goes without saying that it’s been a pretty rough week for everyone in the Irish music industry given Sinead’s passing.
“There’s such a heaviness in everyone’s heart at the moment but everyone is finding their own way to pay tribute to her memory, even here.
“I was at Jason Byrne’s gig this evening and at the very end of his set he called on the crowd to join him in belting out one of her most famous songs. He had the whole audience on their feet singing Mandika in unison. It was a bittersweet but beautiful moment.
“It feels like one of the shining lights of Irish music has been extinguished. We’re all heartbroken but I just hope she knew how much her country cherished her. She was a talent like no other.”
The Saturdays also took to her Instagram grid and shared a pic of Sinead in her youth.
She penned a heartfelt caption alongside the post: “Nothing Compares 2 U Sinéad R.I.P”
Fans took to the comment section below, with one writing: “I am devastated. My life changed forever when I first saw her sing Nothing Compares to You.
“I literally cried as I listened to her and it was such a beautiful, special moment. The day before she passed I was scrolling through posts on Instagram and found a string of songs totally unrelated to my scrolling and she came on singing her song and even after all that time she still had the same effect on me.
“To hear that she was gone the very next day just didn’t seem possible. Was she saying goodbye?”
This comes after the stressful ordeal Sinead suffered last year when her late son went missing for two days before his death was officially confirmed.
His doting mum Sinead announced his death online to fans and said: “May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace.”
For her final social media post, Sinead uploaded a photo of her with Shane as she shared a heartfelt message.
She captioned the touching post: “Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul.
“We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him.”
During her search for Shane, she made a public appeal for her followers to help find him.
She penned online for her fans to read: “Shane, your life is precious. God didn’t chisel that beautiful smile on your beautiful face for nothing.
“My world would collapse without you. You are my heart. Please don’t stop it from beating. Please don’t harm yourself.
“Go to the Gardai and let’s get you to hospital. This is a message for my son, Shane.
“Shane, it’s not funny anymore all this going missing. You are scaring the crap out of me.
“Could you please do the right thing and present yourself at a Gardai station. If you are with Shane please call the Gardai for his safety.”
