Sir Rod Stewart vows to keep touring as it gives him more time for favourite hobby

Sir Rod Stewart has vowed to keep touring into his 80s because, besides his love of music, it gives him more time to make his precious model trains.

The Scottish legend turns 79 in January but shows no signs of slowing down with global lives dates confirmed up until September, plus a new swing album with Jools Holland imminent.
In between shows keen model-maker Rod gets to revel in his beloved train track.

He explained: “That two hours on stage is the most potent drug you can imagine. It’s highly addictive. It’s all the bloody in-between time I don’t like, sitting in hotel rooms…although when I am sat around like that, I build my model railroad so that I’m not idle.

“It’s something I’m working on for five or six hours a day. While all the banders are sitting around picking their noses, I’m occupied.” It was touch and go whether Rod would even become a musician when he was younger, so strong was his love model trains.

He laughed: “My dad was the first person who bought me a model railroad, but he also was the first person to buy me a guitar instead of a part for my train set. When I was young, I said, ‘Dad, I don’t want a guitar; I want that signal.’ So, it’s always been a huge part of my life, and it’s a huge part now.”

Making a swing album with Jools Holland was not only opportunity to embrace a new genre of music, it was a way of extending his hobby because Jools is also a model train nut. Jools revealed recently: “Yes there are some tracks on the new album about trains.

One is called Night Train and I cant remember the other one but yes we have sung about trains on the new album. There are not enough tracks about trains on it to be honest.”

Jools admits his collection is not as impressive as Rod’s but that could change if the rocker gets to bring Jools to Las Vegas next year. He said: “If I go back to Vegas — and I’d like to — if the album’s a big success, maybe I could do a swing show, big band stuff. Who knows?”
