Sky News star Kay Burley slapped with 1,500 Ofcom complaints after Israel remark

Sky News star Kay Burley has been slapped with more than 1,500 Ofcom complaints following comments made about Israel following the terror attack.

Viewers claimed that the 62-year-old misquoted comments made by Palestinian Ambassador Husam Zomlot. During her breakfast show on October 10, the presenter accused Zomlot of saying “Israel had it coming” over the recent attacks carried out by Hamas.

Kay’s words appeared to be taken from an interview with the Palestinian ambassador with CNN’s Chirstiane Amanpour. He said: “What is even more tragic or equally tragic is the blindness and deafness of the international community for so many years.

Viewers took to social media to vent their frustrations towards the presenter. Novara Media’s Michael Walker fumed: “This is really terrible journalism from @KayBurley and reminiscent of a playground s**t-stirrer.

“You can’t just make up provocative quotes and then demand others respond to them.” Another enraged viewer wrote: “Multiple times today [Burley] attributed claims to Palestine’s ambassador [Zomlot] which were untrue.

“She put these to Labour MPs in an effort to get David Lammy to not share a platform with Zomlot tonight.” A third person added: “Sky News were caught out making up quotes supposedly made by the Palestinian ambassador, and then lying to Labour MPs Kay Burley urging MPs not to meet with Zomlot because he had said Israeli victims ‘had it coming’.

“He hadn’t, of course Absolutely appalling!” Calling for her to be dropped from Sky News, another penned: “Without any hyperbole Kay Burley should be sacked for this, she is manufacturing consent for genocide by twisting Zomlot’s words.”

Someone else agreed: “Kay Burley from Sky News, flat out lying to 4 guests about Husam Zomlot. This is beyond disgraceful.

Not to mention dangerous for the rhetoric she is putting out there.” While a sixth shared: “Sorry Kay but what you have just reported was not true? You have glanced over their words and made a brief statement which has a totally different meaning?” (sic)
