Soaps' most dramatic affair reveals – Christmas Day chaos to semi-naked clinch

Affairs are a staple in soaps and weeknight telly simply wouldn’t be the same without them.

This week on Home and Away, Xander discovered that Stacey was cheating on him and the Summer Bay resident was left utterly devastated.

The Channel 5 soap, along with Coronation Street, Emmerdale, EastEnders and Hollyoaks have produced countless affairs between characters which have stretched on for months, sometimes years.

And absolutely no-one is off the cards, proved by Stacey Slater bedding her father-in-law Max Branning and Debbie Dingle sleeping with her husband-to-be’s brother Ross Barton.

But the way these affairs are exposed is what excites the audience the most.

Robert and Aaron – Emmerdale

Before they became arguably the best couple to ever live in the village of Emmerdale, Robert Sugden and Aaron Dingle’s relationship started as a steamy affair.

When Robert arrived back in the village in 2014, he was engaged to Chrissie White – but that didn’t deter him from Aaron.

From their first kiss on the side of the road to steamy car sessions, the pair simply couldn’t stay away from each other.

But as they continued their forbidden relationship, other residents got dragged into the drama and resulted in the death of Katie Sugden and Paddy Kirk getting shot.

Eventually, Aaron decided enough was in enough and revealed all to Chrissie in July 2015.

Standing in the kitchen and Home Farm, Aaron told Chrissie that her beloved husband had been seeing him for months, revealing intricate details about their elicit affair.

A stunned Chrissie refused to believe it at first, but after seeing a furious Aaron explain with tears streaming down his face, she realised everything he was saying was true.

Max and Stacey – EastEnders

Arguably the most iconic affair reveal in soapland, fans got an extra treat over the festive period when Max Branning and Stacey Slater’s ongoing affair was finally exposed.

Despite Stacey being in a relationship with Max’s son Bradley and Max being married to Tanya with two daughters, the pair couldn’t keep their hands off each other.

But it all came to a head on Christmas Day in 2007 when the Slater/Branning clan were sat around the tree and Bradley was handed a mysterious DVD.

Believing it to be footage from Stacey and Bradley’s wedding day, the families gathered around the TV and watched the horror unfold before them.

On the screen was the bride-to-be and father-of-the-groom discussing their fling, with Max even confessing his love to Stacey before they shared a kiss.

The ultimate betrayal tore the Brannings apart and remains one of the greatest moments in EastEnders history.

Ste and Harry – Hollyoaks

Ste Hay and Harry Thompson’s fling couldn’t have been exposed in a more public way if Hollyoaks tried.

During a village party for Pride, the pair began getting steamy behind a curtain before Ste’s husband John Paul exposed their antics to the entire crowd.

Their semi-naked clinch was witnessed by many, including Harry’s dad, Tony, who happened to be Ste’s best friend and had no idea his son was gay.

Deirdre and Mike – Coronation Street

Deirdre and Mike struck up one of the most famous affairs

Deirdre Barlow struck up one of Coronation Street’s most famous affairs when she began a relationship with Mike Baldwin in 1983.

Deirdre and Mike had previously dated before she chose to settle down with Ken Barlow, but romance soon bloomed again between the former lovers.

Racked with guilt, Deirdre eventually confessed to the affair to husband Ken, with Mike turning up on their doorstep after Ken demanded she put the phone down on him.

The famous scene by the Barlows’ front door remains iconic and the affair itself was voted the most gripping storyline in the programme’s history by viewers.

Debbie and Ross – Emmerdale

Debbie Dingle started playing with fire when she began an affair with Ross Barton – the brother of her husband-to-be, Pete Barton.

Their steamy fling continued throughout her relationship and engagement to Pete and they even planned to run away together – but that was before Debbie discovered Ross was the father of her baby half-brother.

Debbie ended things with the village bad boy and was all set to marry Pete, however their wedding day didn’t exactly go to plan.

At the ceremony, Chas Dingle was asked to do the honours and play their first dance track.

Planted by Ross, an oblivious Chas began playing the CD which turned out to be a recording of Debbie discussing her affair with Ross – and it was played at the reception in front of the groom and all of the guests.

To make matters worse, a helicopter then crashed through the ceiling of the wedding venue (caused by Chrissie after learning of Robert and Aaron’s affair) which resulted in two deaths.
