Star Trek icon William Shatner sparks backlash after mocking ‘ridiculous’ alien claims

Star Trek legend William Shatner has enraged sci-fi fans by mocking claims aliens have secretly visited Earth.

The sci-fi star – who became the oldest human to visit space when he made a 90-minute trip on Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin craft in 2021 aged 90 – said he could not believe any being would travel 10,000 light years’ to Earth then stay hidden.

Asked what he thought of the claims made in a US Congress subcommittee hearing Shatner replied: “In my opinion it’s ridiculous.

“You mean some highly intelligent being goes 10,000 light years with advanced technology, arrives here and hides?

“It doesn’t make any sense. If something could reach the Earth they would make a big to-do about, my God, there’s life in other places.”

Shatner said he believed mathematically alien life has to exist in multiple other parts of the vast universe.

But he went on: “If they’re going to make the journey all the way here it just beggars the imagination that they would hide and make like, ‘peek-a-boo, I’m here…no I’m not’.’’

Shatner said aliens would have the same yearnings’ to find other beings as humans. They are not here,’’ he said.

“Because if they were here they would make their presence known.’’

His comments sparked outrage from UFO hunters and even devoted Trekkies.

One tweeted: “Holy s***! The only thing ridiculous here is Shatner’s hubris. How unbelievably ignorant and small minded!’’

Another said: “@WilliamShatner sir we all love you but before commenting/speculating about something you clearly know NOTHING about I beg you sir to do your homework.’’

One more wrote: “Mr Shatner I am so disappointed by your reaction to the hearing. I’ll tell u what don’t make sense, so many military and government officials saying this is true. Why throw away their careers for this?’’

Others suggested visiting ETs may be playing a waiting game by staying in the shadows.

“It might be a planned roll-out and we are in the beginning phase,’’ said one.

“It seems many people have claimed UAP experience beyond the ordinary and now we wait for public evidence. Regardless, it’s the closest we’ve come to public disclosure.’’

Former defence department National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency staffer David Grusch (corr) told Congress the US Government had been covering up its knowledge of UFOs since the 1930s.

He said it had recovered wreckage from UFOs which had crashed on Earth – and “biologics” from “non-human” ETs.

In the past four years he said he had spoken to 40 witnesses who had taken part in secret reverse-engineering programs which attempted to rebuild UFOs from crash debris.

He said he knew where the alien wreckage was stashed but would only reveal locations to Congress members in private.
