One viewer wrote: “@Twitter can you not give us a heart attack? Dick Van Dyke and Jimmy Carter are trending. I was afraid to click their names. I think Mr. Van Dyke had a hash tag.”

The actor’s smile was met with cheers from the judges and audience

Another shocked fan added: “Dick Van Dyke was trending and I almost wept. A 97-year-old man trending? Thank God the reason was for his amazing turn on the [Masked Singer]. Good for him! What a class act.”

They also went on to “bless these nonagenarians” and joked that there “must have been something in the water back in the 1920s”.

A third concerned fan also tweeted: “That’s right people! Dick Van Dyke is doing well! Glad to see him on the Masked Singer! Shocking and great surprise!”

Nick removed Dick’s Gnome costume mask

Others gathered to say that they “couldn’t believe” Dick’s age, that he “is a legend” and that Van Dyke “made their night”.

Dick was sadly eliminated during the first episode of the series and the studio audience were in uproar after his mask was removed.

Judge Nicole Scherzinger was even reduced to tears when she realised who was underneath the costume as Dick flashed his iconic smile to the world.

Host Nick Cannon then told viewers that Van Dyke is the “most seasoned and most decorated” celebrity to have ever taken part in the show.

Cannon then asked Dick what performing as Gnome had been like and the star’s answer was met with a ripple of laughter.

Van Dyke said: “It was really dark in there…I couldn’t see anything!”

The Chitty Chitty Bang Bang actor’s huge costume was comprised of a large green hat covered in flowers and moss, a matching jacket, large pointed ears and a cartoon gnome’s face.
