The View’s Whoopi Goldberg hides panic as Israel correspondent breaks to safety

Whoopi Goldberg was left completely stunned after a “security incident” happened live on air.

The 67-year-old was talking to ABC News chief national correspondent Matt Gutman who was broadcasting from outside Sderot, one of the settlements that came under attack by a Hamas gunman.

Matt said that there had been a “small arms fire” where he stood within “the past hour and a half” before he was approached by a man dressed in a uniform.

The man told the reported: “The IDF [Israel Defence Forces] has issued an immediate alert that everybody has to leave. There is some security incident just near us.”

Whoopi spoke to Matt from back in the studio and urged: “Go do what you’ve got to do, we’ve got you.”

Matt assured Whoopi that he was “okay” and “walking to the car” as he asked if he could “explain what is going on”.

He said: “These armoured Jeeps are going towards where we’ve been hearing this incessant gunfire and just on the other side of the bridge, we’ve seen a large number of troops headed in that direction, you see the ambulances over there.”

Goldberg quickly told Matt: “Get in a car, Matt! Get in the car,” before her co-host Sara Haines urged him to “be careful”.

Whoopi continued: “Well, that’s what happens when it’s live and you’re in the middle of it. We’ve got our fingers crossed that he’s said and he’s going to remain safe.”

After a short commercial break, Whoopi was seen back in the studio as they linked back to Matt in Israel. He confirmed that he was safe and spoke to the hosts about the situation.

He told them there was “a pretty significant movement of troops here” and that he was “okay where he was,” but they can “hear booms in the distance”.

“There was significant gunfire, there was a helicopter, gunship in the air. Obviously they found something, but we are safe right now, Whoopi.”

Matt explained that Sderot is “about a mile” away from the border of Gaza and that he was stood in the town of Kfar Aza, which was “decimated”. Gutman said that the “whole area” including “all of the towns” had been “completely evacuated of civilians”.
