A furious Uma Thurman accused Quentin Tarantino of “trying to kill” her after a horror car crash left her in hospital.
The actress, who turns 53 today (April 29), said the director coerced her into driving a “deathbox” car on a sand road for a scene in 2003 movie Kill Bill despite her telling him she was not comfortable doing so.
She eventually agreed but the car crashed, leaving her with serious injuries in hospital.

Uma feared she would not be able to walk again after injuring her legs as well as hurting her head.
She told the New York Times Tarantino insisted the car was “fine”, adding: “It’s a straight piece of road. Hit 40 miles per hour or your hair won’t blow the right way and I’ll make you do it again.”
She continued: “But that was a deathbox that I was in. The seat wasn’t screwed down properly. It was a sand road and it was not a straight road.”

Uma recalled the crash, saying: “The steering wheel was at my belly and my legs were jammed under me. I felt this searing pain and thought, ‘Oh my God, I’m never going to walk again.’
“When I came back from the hospital in a neck brace with my knees damaged and a large massive egg on my head and a concussion, I wanted to see the car and I was very upset.”
She said the accident was “one of the worst things that have ever happened” to her.

“Quentin and I had an enormous fight, and I accused him of trying to kill me,” she added. “And he was very angry at that, I guess understandably because he didn’t feel he had tried to kill me.”
She was also apparently angry at disgraced producer Harvey Weinstein, who she had accused of trying to sexually assault her, suspecting him of trying to cover up the crash.
Tarantino said: “She feels it’s very possible the car was destroyed, at Weinstein’s insistence.”

Some years later, with Tarantino’s help, she was able to get footage of the crash, which she shared on Instagram.
Tarantino said the crash was the “biggest regret” of his life.
He said he knew Uma was “trepidatious about doing the driving shot” so he took the car for a test drive first.
He explained: “When I was all finished [driving], I was very happy, thinking, she can totally do this, it won’t be a problem. I go to Uma’s trailer…I said, ‘Oh, Uma, it’s just fine.
“You can totally do this. It’s just a straight line, that’s all it is. You get in the car at [point] number one, and drive to number two and you’re all good.’ Uma’s response was, ‘Okay’.

“Because she believed me. Because she trusted me. I told her it would be okay. I told her the road was a straight line.
“I told her it would be safe. And it wasn’t. I was wrong. I didn’t force her into the car. She got into it because she trusted me. And she believed me.'”
Uma has appeared in three Tarantino films, including Pulp Fiction and two volumes of Kill Bill.
