The ‘uncomfortable sex scene’ in Cat Person was meticulously planned so no-one on set cringed – unlike theatre goers.
Directed by Susanna Fogel the movie centres around the awkward bonking scene, but she says her experience of filming the pivotal sequence was anything but awks. Speaking to PEOPLE Fogel said that her goal was to create a scene that was unbearable to watch, but without making anyone on set feel uncomfortable.
To achieve this, she worked with a storyboard artist to produce a comic book strip version of the scene. Fogel said planning every minute of it helped to lighten the mood and make the conversation more productive and laughter-filled.

Cat Person is based on Kristen Roupenian’s 2017 viral New Yorker short story and stars Emilia Jones and Nicholas Braun.
The movie depicts all that goes wrong when college student Margot (Jones, 21) meets the much-older Robert (Braun, 35) while working at a movie theatre.
Though the pair initially engage in flirty text messages, their up-and-down first date culminates in a rendezvous at Robert’s house that Margot quickly realizes she does not want to participate in and doesn’t verbally consent to.
To plan out the scene, Fogel collaborated with a storyboard artist from New Zealand to create a visual representation resembling a comic book strip.

The stick-figure version of the scene was amusing to observe and inherently comedic, according to Fogel.
This served as her way of introducing Nick and Emilia to the choreography of the scene, presented through a series of panels that lightened the overall tone of the conversation.
These storyboards allowed Fogel, Jones, and Braun to directly address the awkwardness of the subject matter and engage in productive discussions filled with laughter regarding their plans for the day.
Fogel attributes her inclination to fully trust the process to a combination of nerves and a genuine desire for complete confidence.
“It’s such a traumatizing scene,” Fogel added. “But it’s so absurd to have four people plotting it out in that way.”
The particular scene showcases Jones’s character grappling with the violation of her boundaries. Notably, she remains unaware of Robert’s age until after the incident, prompting him to question her eagerness to depart from his home.
Reflecting on the day of filming, Fogel described it as one of the most gratifying experiences.
Despite the stark contrast between the actors’ involvement and the viewers’ perception, she believes they accomplished something significant.
Fogel added that they took great care to ensure that Jones did not have to appear nude during the sequence.
“I really needed [the audience] to be trapped in her world of trying to get to the other side of this encounter,” she says.
“I didn’t even want to give them a moment of relief of being able to escape into just looking at a beautiful girl in that male-gaze way that just happens when there’s nudity.”
