1% Club contestant accused in cheating scandal breaks silence after ITV ‘probe’

A contestant on The 1% Club has addressed accusations of cheating during his appearance on the popular ITV show.

Player Jason Duckett defended himself against the allegations after some viewers alleged he gave illicit prompts to his wife and fellow participant, Rowenna who was also playing the game in the studio. The 36-year-old participated in a recent episode hosted by Lee Mack which saw 100 contestants aim for a £100k cash prize.

In a crucial moment in the game, Jason and the other players were asked the question: “To which body part can you add one letter at the start to make it the word for the job it does,” with the correct response being “ear” for “hear”. But TV spectators claimed they spotted Jason subtly prompting his wife to the correct answer by touching his ear lobes.

Shocked fans of the show took to social media to air their grievances. Some of the complaints included statements such as: “Did anyone else notice this guy giving away the answer when he touched both his ears?”

Another penned: “Ear ear . . . think there was a wee bit of cheating going on in 1% Club.” While a third displeased viewer wrote: “Bit naughty from Mr Duckett there rubbing his ear.”

However, Jason has now hit back at the accusations asserting he had already been disqualified before the gesture took place. Talking to The Sun, he said: “I almost admire the creativity of someone to come up with that because I hadn’t thought of that.”

The comic quipped: “There was nothing to gain for either of us. We were both out. Anything I was doing it was to just sort of calm myself. If you spin it, you could say my arms are folded. Was the answer harm and arm?”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the show also responded to the rumours, stating: “Any game show worth its salt attracts conspiracy theories. But happily, initial inquiries quickly established that there were no grounds for suspicion.”

The news comes as presenter Lee Mack spoke on the success of his hit quiz show. Talking to the Mirror at last year’s National Television Awards, where The 1% Club received the award for best quiz game show, Lee simply said: “It’s very nice.”

The star also went on to say that people “love quizzes”. As well as quiz shows, Lee is a popular comic and has played a leading role in the BBC show, Not Going Out.
