Antiques Road Trip chaos as dealer breaks 188-year-old item and says ‘oh dear’ in blunder

An Antiques Road Trip expert was left rather red-faced after he accidentally broke a timeless relic on the programme.

The iconic BBC show is no stranger to a jaw-dropping moment. Since its debut, the series has seen a ton of unusual items get valued for eye-watering amounts.

But during a 2017 episode, things took an awkward turn when expert Charles Hanson made an unfortunate mistake that ended up costing him. The show saw Charles and Christina Trevanion start their road trip to the city of Manchester.

Browsing the items, a pistol caught Charles’ eye. He picked it up and said: “This is George IV. It’s a duelling-type pistol and it’s 188-years-old.

The expert ended up breaking the relic

“You can see that because its handle here is just about to fall off,” he added. However suddenly, the pistol broke into pieces as Charles exclaimed: “Oops.”

He then started to look around to see if he had been caught, and quipped: “It has fallen off actually!” Narrator Tim Wonnacott could be heard laughing and teased: “Silly boy!”

Things took an awkward turn

Mortified, Charles went on: “Oh dear me. Well that’s just great, isn’t it? I might have to buy it now just regardless. It is pretty tired but the reason I like it is because it’s in its original condition.

“It would never, it could never be fired now and it’s purely a relic. It could be cheap. That’s it really. It could be cheap.”

It’s fair to say Antiques Road Trip has kept the nation gripped over the years. Back in 2021,expert Paul Laidlaw floored viewers after he made show history when a £60 find turned into a five-figure profit.

In the episode, Paul stumbled upon an old camera in an antique shop that later fetched a staggering £20,000 at a Bury St. Edmunds auction in Suffolk. While hunting the owner told him there was “stuff everywhere” and eventually he found something that caught his eye.

After exploring the store, Paul offered the owner £50 for an optical instrument priced at £75. The owner countered with £60, sealing the deal. As the auction kicked off, Edward confirmed multiple people were on the line and jumping up in thousands. When he started getting into the teens Edward said it wasn’t a “record price”, a record for a general sale was £15,000.

But then the bidding for the camera continued to shoot up before getting to the record-breaking price of £20,000. An amazed Paul said he was “flabbergasted”.
