Antiques Roadshow viewers were left stunned after a bloke was told he could earn thousands for a collection of vases he bought at a garage sale.
In the US version of the show, which airs on PBS, the man had been out on his morning coffee run when he spotted a selection of beautiful glass vases for sale in someone’s front yard. He gave the owner $150 (£120) for them and it turned out to be a great investment.
He explained: “I was driving in the morning, I left to get a cup of coffee and I saw a sign for a garage sale. It was about 7.30 in the morning. The lady was still unpacking some of the boxes.

“She was taking out this taller piece and I directly was attracted to it, the form and the colour and knew it was something special. She told me, ‘I have two other pieces if you’re interested’, and she pulled out those other two pieces.
“I didn’t have enough cash with me and she reserved them for me. I went to the bank, grabbed $150, gave her the money and took them with me home.”
The expert, Arlie Sulka, was impressed by the “remarkable” deal he got as she explained that the glass had been blown at Louis Comfort Tiffany. She explained: “It also has a little number on it with a prefix in front of it, M prefix, which indicates that it was made between 1898 and 1900. Wow. That’s old. This was actually called an Egyptian onion vase.
“Now the other two pieces were actually made by another company called Loates, which was an Austrian company. These are a little bit later, maybe five, ten years at the most.”
She added that the blue one would go for between $1,500 and $2,000. However, the orange one would be slightly more at £3,000 to £5,000 and the tall slender one would be between $6000 to $8,000.
“I’m shocked. For a $150 investment?” he said. To which, the appraiser replied: “I think it’s remarkable.”
