Anya Taylor-Joy made her iconic horror film even scarier with one brave demand

Anya Taylor-Joy demanded a massive change be made to her scariest movie yet.

She landed her breakout role in 2015’s The Witch and Anya recently confessed that she asked for a pivotal moment to be adjusted. In an interview with British GQ, the star admitted that she felt something wasn’t quite right with her character.

Taylor-Joy said: “I remember having a really important conversation with Rob (director) where there’s a moment where Thomasin’s been accused of doing everything and she’s trying to tell her parents, and it’s actually the twins and that they’re making this covenant with the devil. Rob had written that I was hysterically crying and I just couldn’t get there, which was weird for me because tears come relatively easily.”

“I just looked at Rob and I was like: ‘She’s angry. We have to stop pushing this narrative that we just cry all the time. Like, she’s so angry right now.” Thanks to Anya’s demands, she managed to change the entire narrative of Thomasin’s story.

The character was originally seen as weak and helpless, but through her anger she was transformed into a strong female lead: “Having that conversation with him and kind of sticking up for my character in a way really set a precedent for me. I love it when the film came out, Rob came up to me and said: ‘You were right.’”

The Witch was released in 2015 and is set in 1650s New England. Anya stars as Thomasin, a member of a Puritan family that discover evil forces in the woods near their farm.

It was widely released under A24, known for their quirky films that go against the grain, and was a huge success grossing $40 million after just a $4 million budget. Thomasin cares for her new brother but a witch steals the baby, killing him to make an ointment.

The family then struggles through more supernatural goings-on as they are thrown into chaos, tormented by the magical being. Finally, after her whole family are killed, Thomasin frolicks off to join a coven as she enters the forest completely naked.
