Apple TV’s Ted Lasso set for shock Season 4 return – but fans are divided

Warning: Contains spoilers for Season 3 of Ted Lasso

Hit Apple TV+ series Ted Lasso is set to be returning for a fourth season – but fans are divided over the news.

The feel-good show follows endearing American soccer coach Ted (Jason Sudeikis) who is recruited to manage fictional British football team AFC Richmond, uprooting his life across the pond to take the job. The last season concluded with Ted finally returning home to the US where he’s now coaching his son Henry’s team.

Cast member Annette Badland had previously claimed the show would ever return after Season 3 during a 2023 Loose Women appearance, but Warner Bros Television, the studio behind the show, are now considering bringing it back much to the surprise of fans – and seemingly cast members too.

According to Deadline, the studio has picked up the options on fan favourites Hannah Waddingham, Brett Goldstein, and Jeremy Swift, all original cast members under UK acting union Equity’s umbrella. The next step seems to be reaching out to those signed under SAG-AFTRA, including the show’s co-creators and executive producers Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hut, as well as Juno Temple among others.

However, there’s a question mark hanging over Phil Dunster, who played the charming scoundrel Jamie Tartt, due to his current commitments to Amazon Prime Video’s The Devil’s Hour and Apple’s own, Surface.

Early preparations are also being made to open a writers room with an option for an early 2025 start.

Bill Lawrence, one of the show’s creators, has always said that any future chapters of Ted Lasso hinge on Jason Sudeikis’ involvement. Speaking to Collider, he remarked: “Whatever Jason feels like doing and whatever his decision is, we’re all down with it.

Season 3 concluded back in 2023

“Not only is he the star, he’s the head writer, and he’s also the dude whose life just has to be completely overhauled and moved to a foreign country with young children. It’s a big deal. So, as a fan, if someone’s like, ‘Oh, it’s gonna happen again,’ I’ll go nuts. As a partner, I’m down for whatever he wants to do.”

Fans remain divided over the Season 4 news. One viewer shared their hesitation on Twitter/X, writing: “Honestly, I’m not sure we need more of the same. Let’s hope they bring something fresh, or it’s just going to drag on.”

Another fan made clear that they were only interested if Jason Sudeikis reprised his role as Ted. “If Jason Sudeikis is only EP [Exec Producer] and not reprising his role we don’t want it,” they said. One cynical fan added: “Series finale so bad they have to come back for another season to fix it.”

Many more welcomed the news, with one viewer exclaiming that “Peak television is back”. Another hailed it as “one of the greatest shows of all time”, adding: “You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and love all the characters.”
