Bargain Hunt buyer screeches at expert over ‘favourite’ item’s devastating value

A woman on Bargain Hunt was left so distraught after hearing the auctioneer’s estimate on her favourite item that she was heard screeching at their expert who had gotten it wrong.

In the episode, which aired on BBC One today (March 19), two couples were seen going head to head in search of great deals to take to auction. But sometimes the buyers can fall in love with an item and their potential at auction takes a backseat — which seems to be what happened with Karen and Gary on the red team.

The pair were given £300 to pick three items to take to auction in Lichfield with the assistance of expert Tom Forrester. They seemed to do well with their first two items — a leather-bound blotter and a Balmoral teddy bear.

However, the couple had taken a risk with their big spend. The pair were unsure about whether to buy the 100-year-old chainmail purse at first but hid it to come back later.

Tom Forrester described it as “very pretty” and assured the couple it would be a “popular” item at auction. The pair went back to buy it with just seconds to spare and bagged the item for £99.

But when it was taken to auctioneer Richard Winterton for his estimate, it was revealed that the couple grossly overpaid. “It doesn’t do a lot for me I have to say,” Winterton said. “It is silver. We’ve only gone £30 – £50. I can’t see it making a lot more than that.”

When the item went under the hammer, Karen was devastated to hear the low estimate. She screeched: “Oh Tom! Really?!”

Presenter Caroline Hawley tried to reassure them that it was “just an estimate” but it still failed to make some cash. It sold for just £25, a loss of £74 – leaving Karen lying heartbroken on her husband’s shoulder.

Viewers didn’t seem surprised by the loss as they had predicted so on X (Twitter). One user wrote: “Those chain purses never make money,” while another added: “Can’t see the manky bag making any money.”

A third commented: “Dirty horrible manky silver purse, bet it smells like an old Brillo pad.”
