A Batman star who once provoked outrage from the Christian community with his ‘package’, says that he had to take ‘shrink pills’ to avoid causing further offence.
US actor Burt Ward played the lycra-clad Robin in the original Batman series on ABC from 1966 until 1968. Alongside co-star Adam West, who played the titular character, the pair chopped and kappowed their way through villains in the camp crime caper.
But all eyes weren’t on the caped crusaders it seems, as their famously-tight fitting costumes were apparently too tight in the lower regions for some. In fact their snug nether regions left too little to the imagination, according to the Catholic League of Decency, who filed a complaint with the network.

“They thought that Robin had a very large bulge for television,” Ward told Page Six.
Although he promises that it was all him, unlike Adam West who played Batman.
“With Adam they put Turkish towels in his undershorts,” he explained.
The issue became so big that the studio made Ward visit a doctor who gave him medication “to shrink me up.”
However, Ward said he became a little concerned about the effects the pills were having, and quit taking them almost immediately.

“I took them for three days and then I decided that they can probably keep me from having children,” he said.
“I stopped doing that and I just used my cape to cover it.”
Despite being a star of the top-rated show at just 20, Ward insists he didn’t spend his nights being pursued by eager fans.
“You must understand I never smoked, drank or did drugs so I never went to a bar in my entire life,” he told Page Six.
“It’s not to say I didn’t go out and have a good time but I never went out and did what you think Hollywood (celebrities) do. I was a straight-A student at UCLA,” he added.
Ward added that the Dean at UCLA was disappointed when he left in his third year to play Robin, as she believed he should have been a nuclear physicist due to his high grades in science and maths.
