BBC Breakfast sparked a wave of fury among viewers this week when it was abruptly pulled off air before its usual end time.
The morning show typically broadcasts from 6am to 9am every day on BBC One. However, during the Olympics coverage, the programme usually shifts to BBC Two from 8am, necessitating viewers to change channels.
This weekend (August 3), the show unexpectedly concluded an hour earlier than usual and didn’t switch channels with Blue Peter being the 8.20am programme on BBC Two.
Irate fans took to social media to vent their frustrations, with one irked viewer exclaiming: “Oy, what’s going on thought we turn over to BBC Two dear lord!”
Baffled, another user on X formerly Twitter wrote: “I thought this, is it different on weekends? ” to which the original poster replied: “It’s the Olympics, but I suppose tomorrow will be the same. No wonder Naga [Munchetty] didn’t show up!”, reports the Express.
The show faced criticism for its segment on British Sign Language, after pop star Olly Murs mistakenly identified a video of him using Makaton as BSL. While some viewers appreciated the distinction the programme made between the two sign languages, others were disappointed that Makaton appeared to be labelled the “wrong one” on BBC.
One social media user commented: “It’s a bit sad that the BSL item just labelled Makaton as the wrong signs rather than also celebrated its accessibility for those who use it.”
Another viewer was not impressed, tweeting: “BBC Breakfast I’ve just listened to your report on BSL and was so disappointed that Makaton was hardly mentioned and when it was, in a negative way. Why? it’s such an important form of communication especially for young children with communication issues.”
One person chimed in with discontent: “I’ve just watched this interview and I understand how important using the correct signing is but feel so disappointed that the importance of Makaton was not addressed. By promoting BSL you gave no weight to Makaton and have further isolated people with a learning disability.”
However, some viewers were delighted by the coverage, especially as England Deaf Men’s Football Captain Jamie Clarke made an appearance to discuss Olly’s journey. A pleased viewer praised: “Thank you. I found your interview very informative and I learned a lot. Good luck with the Deaf Olympics.”
Another also learnt something new, posting: “Brilliant interview. You have educated me today and I want to do what I can to start learning BSL.”
